The vast majority of people view suicide as dark/disturbing. The general response to someone who has committed suicide is sorrow and regret, for example, that said person had such a bright future ahead of them. I especially hate the "permanent solution to a temporary problem" response, as it disregards the many people w/ chronic illnesses, disabilities, & other disorders..
I find it interesting that the general population views death as the worst possible outcome, when that is far from the truth. If forced to choose between constant torment & suffering v. an unknown that at the very least offers the chance of relief, who wouldn't choose the latter? Many people would argue that death is the lack of existence, which by nature would be neutral.
I also think that suicide is commonly seen as the enemy, when really it is a way out for many. Imagine being unable to die.. with no end to the amount of pain possible for a human to endure, life would be inescapable. I believe that people disregard the suffering with which one had been afflicted, and focus solely on the tragedy of the death.
