Do you think that it's possible that one day people will respect our right to die and legalize accessible methods for us to ctb such as assisted death? Or at the very least allow us to talk about being suicidal as openly as we do on this forum?

I think maybe one day people will be more empathetic with it. For now I can't see anything close to talking about it without being criticized.

Yes, I think with more awareness about mental health issues, subsequently there will be more awareness about suicides and its causes, and thus acceptance and implementation of legally assisted suicide (euthanasia)

If mental health care/disability rights stay as shitty as they are now, I'm sure people will even start to view suicide as justified. It will be justified in the same way that euthanasia is often seen as acceptable and humane for those with chronic physical illness or terminal diseases.

We're far from this though, and in pretty much every country in the world you can be fired for being depressed. Cultural attitudes of the mentally ill are also behind. But these kinds of changes are always a bit slow. Since euthanasia for the terminally ill is slowly getting legalized in many places, soon mental illness will fall under those categories, in a similar model to Switzerland and other countries with legal euthanasia for the mentally ill.

Well maybe, but not in my lifetime or anywhere close.

Humans, like all creatures on this planet are hard wired to survive, and procreate and suicide can interfere with those and maybe more aspects.

With time and evolution, maybe just maybe the idea of one's self having the ability to do as one wishes with no human down casting might come to fruition.

No, religion and government would never allow the public to think for themselves, nor will people respect our right to a dignified death at our comfort.

They'll "only" be assisted suicide for the +75 and for the terminally ill in 10 years, other people won't have access to it.

I suspect that as society becomes more "utopian", the mentally ill and terminally depressed will be put to scorn even more.

Not anytime in the near future lol. Maybe when robots take over, they may think of humans as worthless and finally allow legalized ctb methods. I don't see society allowing us to openly express our suicidal thoughts anytime soon, if ever.

there are days I hate this planet :: this thread just made me miserable.
from a recovering addicts perspective (here i go again!) studies show that addicts in active addiction have a 98% chance of violent deaths (suicide, od, robbery, prison being the top 4)
I'm all for voluntary euthanasia for us. Look recovery is a blessing and some of us live very productive lives, but I'm privileged :: im the rarity in spite of myself.
I've had a very fucked up life :: because of bad choices I've made from using (streets /prison et al). I'm successful and productive it means nothing but I like my lifestyle, a recovery blessing I don't deserve :: (my not so productive friends call me 'functionaljunkie' to me that's Baseline existence) sport / fighting replace destructive patterns but my self obsession and self-deceit are crushing :: the insanity is everyday I crave using.
I pray & white knuckle like nobody's business :: im a fourty year veteran of this insane using /recovery /relapse cavalcade and I want to get off.
Sadly I have no option but to do it myself (if I end up in another institution, without options it'd be like being back in hell) :: while i won't today, maybe not even tomorrow. But someday.
Thanks for the thread,
when I'm miserable that means I'm learning something about myself...

I am not sure about that. Society needs to keep us alive so we can pay taxes. Allowing us the right to die would shatter many people's delusions that life is always worth living. It should be accepted though. We deserve a right to die. None of us asked to exist in the first place, so it isn't like we have any obligations to stay alive. There is no limit as to how bad life can get and expecting people to suffer for decades is cruel. But every year, more countries are legalising euthanasia, so there is progress I guess.

But euthanasia for whom?
◇I understand how unbearable life can become especially if you are physically ill.
♡What if its a mental / addictive disorder that we cannot escape?
♤ Surely possibly it'd be better to let us end our days, with some dignity and proper purpose than struggle like this?

Yes, you are right. I think we all deserve the option of euthanasia, we should be able to end it peacefully on our own terms.

People can still barely wrap their heads around homosexual people, a concept that at its core is completely harmless, it's just a matter of who someone wants to love and fuck. Despite this, there's an endless list of excuses people will make to hate and restrict homosexual people. Suicide, like homosexuality, is still seen as selfish, a product of mental illness, and something we "choose" to suffer through.

The few places that allow medically assisted suicide are very strict about it. In fact, I live in one of such places and yet here I am.

All I can say is good luck, I'm not waiting to find out.

I don't think it will happen in my lifetime or even the next. I wish it was though. All I want is to decide on when I can die and be surrounded by loved ones while I'm dying. I'm scared to die alone, but it's my only option.

Not in our time that's for sure humans have a bloody history of conflict and stuff they would rather glorified death in war field than death by individual choice though looking at how high our population numbers have gone I am sure a day will come when rich elites will want to get rid of a big chunk of population to save resources that will the time when it would could become somewhat normalize though that time is like 400 to 600 years in the future not now.

No. Never. More people will commit suicide and it will be less shocking. It will be more of an obvious conclusion to terrible existences. Fact is wages are not going up and things are a lot more expensive. Old people are working without benefits and lots are unemployed. This will only exacerbate as things become more automated and more expensive.

Yes! Once machines are sophisticated enough to do nearly all the labor the wealthy require, then they won't need us costly human cattle anymore. They'll be happy to be rid of us then.

Nope, we have no strength as a movement because we all die. Things more like LGBT movement and feminism have been consistently pushed for at least 20 years which is what eventually made people take them seriously

I believe someday if will be accepted. The current thoughts on suicide have only existed since roughly the 1500's. Prior to that time most societies accepted suicide even if some qualifiers were added. This society is an enigma. They accept abortion but denounce suicide (and executions). Curious how that line is drawn. Keep in mind that there are places around the world were painless suicide is offered for those with terminal illness. It may seem like a stretch but it is a beginning, I believe, to changing attitudes toward those of us who wish to terminate our own existence and leave this world. Hopefully to something better.

It's so far been my experience, members of this site notwithstanding, that until someone's stood on the edge of the abyss they do not understand why death should be a valid option. Those of us who have or do consider ctb as a valid and logical option will always be considered "unwell", "unstable", etc. by those who are lucky enough to have a life full of rainbows and happy sparkles. It's unlikely, certainly in our lifetimes, that the right to choose to end your own life or assist someone ending theirs will be acceptable. Sadly the rainbow and happy sparkles brigade will see to that. You only have to look at the opposition to places like this to see the general attitude.

Feminism has been consistently pushed for at least 20 years?
What about the right to vote, to work and to have a bank account?
You could add 150 years imho.

No, quite the contrary, there is a tendency towards the opposite direction! Aging and death are treated like an illness that has to be cured. Even in a nursing home we are not allowed to die, because the medical devices that prolong life are a big business.

The dealing with Corona is a good example for this tendency. Two extreme positions are possible.
1. Corona is a mercy for health care system, social system and public health. No countermeasures necessary.
2. Society must make any conceivable sacrifice in order to prolong the life of dying persons for some weeks.
Instead of discussing the full range of options only the second position was considered, at least in my country. It was a mercy for the pharmaceutical industry.
