On average I am quite convinced German politicians are less corrupt than in many other countries.

The Christian conservative party is not as populist as some leftwingers pretend. They become more populist. But thus far nor as populist as many other European conservative parties. There is still the firewall to the AfD.

Despite saying this. Germany is pretty good in producing nazis and right-wing extremists. The politicians in general might be on average more centrist but the AfD is among the most extreme right-wing parties in Europe.

Has someboy of you heard of Maximilian Krah? He from time to time has staff members who turn out to be Chinese spies. He was the leading candidate in the latest election from the European parliament. In an interview during his campaign he emphasized not all members of the SS (Nazi Schutzstaffel/ nazi elite troop) were criminals.

Even the far-right in many Eurpean countries were shocked after this statement.

Die AfD sind Vaterlandsverräter anyway. (The AfD consists mostly of traitors of their own home country, anyway.

No more or less than in other Western European countries, perhaps just better at pretending. Here, they screw you over with a big smile on their faces. 🤡

A few days ago, we had another election, and the small majority fell for it again. In four years, we'll be on our knees.

Not really, while politicians in my country are definitely rotten to their core, I don't think there's any difference between them and those from other countries. That profession attracts power hungry people so I think that even the seemingly nice ones are awful. They are just better at hiding it. I guess one shouldn't generalize an entire profession but let's be real, there are very few good ones, and the most successful ones got there by backstabbing and climbing over figurative corpses.

No, all politicians are corrupt in some form. Money, power, control, etc. Some mask it better than others and some have a sweeter siren song and people who want to believe their lies.

Only those who carried out deportations were criminals.

I think South African leaders are maybe just more transparent about their corruption. More straightforward, you could say.

Corruption in a 3rd world country is definitely evil. The Philippines is controlled by around 250 political families. Dynasties, is what they are. Rampant corruption but we barely see politicians in jail. We even elect convicted corrupt/criminal politicians like other countries, tho we also love incompetent celebrities running offices. We worship them here as much as we worship dictators. We complain so much about how hard life is, but yeah at the end of the day, we love corrupt politicians!

We perpetuate extended political families. We are aware that they are corrupt, we are aware of the injustice. It's not just the politicians that are rotten; the people are too.

The countries that seem most squeaky clean and least corrupt are always as bad or worse than the obviously corrupt ones. Never forget that. I don't want to dox myself but I know most people would be very surprised to find out some of the goings on in the place I am currently living in.

Bad people are pretty much universally bad... and the way the world works does not at all encourage good leaders. In dictatorships, obviously bad people tend to rise to power or at least be corrupted by it. In countries that have elections, assuming those elections are "fair", there really is nothing to encourage good people to run for office and EVERYTHING to encourage bad people to run for office.

I want to believe there are more good people than bad people in the world... but that is tough sometimes when you see how many people rally to defend their bad guy vs the other side's bad guy... but even IF there are more good people in the world than bad, clearly the bad rise to the top of the power structure way more often and tend to make the long-term policies.

I'm from Brazil, and for as long as I can remember, most politicians here seem corrupt; the disputes are always polarized and lack innovation.

American checking in - there has been a certain level of political corruption for decades but Trump has taken it to an extraordinary level. Rumor has it he's made billions in crypto scams and crony deals since taking office, and of course he's turning the White House into a Taj Mahal.

Why would the role of a professional liar be different based on geography? It hasn't changed in 3000 years of known human history.

When I read what you said, your first opinion is you believe your government has less corruption than any other government, yet strongly believe are very good at manufacturing Nazis....

Maybe you're just biased

What's the difference? A country is defined by having a governing state and large body of land with a population size more than a village. I guess unless you're Taiwan and China says, no, you aren't a country.... But that's another history lesson for another day. :/

The governments in the last decades were all moderate and no extremists.

But there are also extremists in my country. And increasingly within the last years they are part of the parliamentary opposition. I think many Germans define themselves over Moral superiority and this can be used to radicalize citizens. There is a lot of Black white thinking and sheep mentality.

So is it the people or the governing state? I don't think you understand my question because you're conflating the political system and the people under those groups as the issue. If the people are the issue, isn't it the political bodies or parties that are just as responsible since they represent the "voice" for their parties?

If we analyze history very carefully, it's the group think mentality (conforming to the group) that created these devastating scenarios in history. Unit 731 is an amazing example of this as this literally skewed the way Japanese people thought and culture. Doctors performing horrendous "experiments" on humans.

I would say part of the problem are the institutions, the education system and the way Germany handled its culture of remembrance
in its interaction with citizens. Germany has a bigger issue with Neo-Nazis and the far right in East Germany. This has economic reasons but also in the GDR they painted a different Picture of the Nazi time. Many people from GDR feel disadvantaged and never came to peace with the reunification because they feel like they are second class citizens. They are underrepresented in high Positions for example and have less opportunities to make it in life. They are sick of getting reduced to Stereotypes. And its True increasingly the far right gains power also in Western parts of Germany.

We talk a lot in schools about the second World war and the Nazi crimes. But it is easy to mock this if people feel increasingly alienated from it. More and more people from that Generation die. People think they are not responsible for the things that happened 80 Years where they don't feel a connection anymore. The Internet culture rewards you in its attention economics for bold and edgy Takes. And you can earn a lot of money with it. Right-wing influencers become increasingly popular and they profit from breaking any taboo.

I don't feel comfortable to decide whether its solely the fault of the people or solely a Problem caused by the political system and its parties. The parties made Germany a success Story thus far. We are more stable than many other countries in Europe. But we are also vulnerable for demagogues. Not everything is bad. If the education system or the culture of remembrance was completely wrong Germany would not be peacefully anymore. Our history makes us vulnerable though. The history of the German people and the German national state is full of national traumatas. And demagogues can use this as their weapon. The far-right tries to rewrite history and their Narratives become increasingly popular. They break almost every and any taboo to shift the overton window. And especially because there are so many taboos its easy to paint Germany as illiberal. By the same people who want to establish an illiberal democracy.

I can see where you are coming from, thank you for elaborating. It sounds like the culture and influence of the political parties are affecting thoughts, beliefs and values of it's people. It is a shame that it infiltrates into public education systems as well, since that's how governments used to spread propaganda, was through the youth via free education.

What I've learned from history is that governments or people in power, use the situations of the disenfranchised to influence thoughts and beliefs. It works.... Extremely well too.... I love to joke this is how America became Britain's bastard child. :/

I find that fascinating too, I'm learning it's a central theme for our generation to feel disconnected with their past.... It's a paradox to me and I find it troubling...

That's very true about Germany being one of the most stable countries in Europe. I would argue it represents a similar recovery to Japan during that same time period. Both countries really modernized and recovered.

I think at times, it's the underlying culture of the country that influences the opinions and beliefs of it's people. It's fair to say you don't feel comfortable answering because it's a complex issue between the political systems, the education system, and the people under those who operate within it.

Government takes an agenda, creates propaganda, and spread it through the youth. Now truth is in the eye of the storyteller.
