Facebook has hidden the dangers on the mental health of young people in particular (including with Instagram).

Thanks to people who infiltrated the bad people groups, the gangs, and who managed to recover evidence against these secret groups and profiles, there were complaints.

Despite complaints to the authorities, facebook has never erased all this, believing that it is the privacy of the groups and people who have these profiles who share with their "friends".

Facebook has destroyed lives, driven friends I've known to suicide, driven once-healthy people into madness...

I got banned on dacebook for hate speech by saying that I hate living in quebec. A province isn't a minority group, hate speech doesn't apply!

Facebook has abused its monopoly and advertisements so that everyone only uses facebook, whatsapp and instagram and no other means of communication, in particular the competition (Zoom, telephone, SMS, email...).

How many media, shops, schools, work groups, studies, only use facebook to communicate, organize games, events...

This total dependence of most people on facebook (which is now renamed Meta) is really worrying, both because facebook can decide on its own who to block, censor, obliterate, force everyone to respect the facebook wills, gossip, be mean, to rise to the front to make themselves known to others. This is where the influencers were born, thanks to instagram bought by facebook. It is very bad for mental health.

Too bad no authority in the world regulates all this. Too bad that at school, no young people are made aware of the dangers of Facebook and the Internet in general.

I knew the internet without facebook, and I had never seen so much harassment, mockery, nastiness, but hey, there were no phones with cameras and internet.

Meta is creating a metaverse, which reminds me, in the past, of second life, which had caused damage to mental health, in particular the total dependence on these virtual universes.
I regret the world without internet, so peaceful and healthy for mental health, but it's true, this world was not perfect. I know that the human species is generally mean, even if people are kind, helpful, or at least understanding and open.

But without the internet, forums like this would not have existed.

We need an internet that is not managed by private companies, especially multinationals, like the giants of the net.

It is repellent and disgusting to me when in my right mind, I 100% agree that it is bad for mental health. At those times though I tend to be isolated, narcissistic and crave attention plus driven to communicate all the psychotic garbage in my brain.

Fortunately (I really mean this) I have almost no friends or followers on there so not too much damage done. As it was I had to spend many hours manually deleting the embarrassing shit I had written.

I think it's bad, i am not even counting the new ways you have to torture someone, but for children/society development in general.
It's addicting, and the time you spent there you could have spent learning something new.

I can't really comment on it objectively since my own experience with it and the internet as a whole has been a disaster. More the lack of it when it would have been useful. Now there's no escaping it. I remember in the early days a friend made an account pretending to be me and I was angry but in hindsight he was doing me a favour and had it actually been me I might be in a different place now instead of left behind. Now we're into the next phase with the metaverse and I've still to this day never even been on Facebook. It's too much and I can't handle it at all.

I think facebook is bad from every angle. As a company, they've shown that they do not care about ethics as long as they have growth and positive effects on their bottom line. regardless of the company, studies have shown facebook and other social media generally tend to negatively affect people's mental health and it doesn't help that facebook actively uses research to make it more addictive. and of course there's all the ways facebook gets misused to spread misinformation or harvest data to manipulate people. the only good thing it can provide is to get people together or stay connected, but there are other ways to do that. I would honestly love if facebook and meta just died

I rarely use FB and can only speak to my experience (separate from the politics which are obviously problematic.)

When I post updates about my illness (short informing videos etc.) The posts are completely ignored. When I post something fluffy, like an old photo when I was in high school, I recently got a surprising amount of likes and comments. I don't use FB for news - that's dangerous. The problem I have is people just want the fluff and nothing real. No thanks.

I deactivated it 4 weeks ago as I was just getting triggered by so many posts it just got stupid, since deactivating not 1 so called friend has reached out to me which has made me feel like shit. It was good initially when it first started. There was enough features to stay in contact with people far away and share some pictures with them. That idea was good in itself.
However, later they started adding more and more dopamine inducing features such as the like button which made people seek likes and approval. Then there was tagging, groups, poking (the heck was that even for) but it still had some innocence at this time.
But then they included ads at every corner, commercialized everything, introduced algorhytms which lead to echo chambers which we see today and connected Facebook with other much more insidious platforms such as Instagram. I also remember the time when there used to be those ridiculous addicting games like Farmville, Petville, YouVille etc. which made kids at the time spend a lot of time on it. They also made it necessary to have a profile for a job or school activity and soon it was everywhere all the time.
I hate social media and what it has done to my generation but I don't hate the initial idea of Facebook. However we let it get too far and now it's too late.
