Discussion do you have a will??

hey ss, i have a question for everyone: do you have a will/what you would like to be done with your body? i'm in my late twenties and i would very much like to have a will and be cremated, but i can't easily go about like… meeting with a lawyer and even if i could, i can't do that without alerting my family (which i live with).

a will is especially important to me because i'm transgender, but my entire family is transphobic and only my immediately family knows. i haven't had the opportunity to change my name and gender marker which now i'm like, what's even the point.

additionally, my entire family is mormon and i just cringe at the idea of everyone talking about me being with god now or whatever. i get that funerals are more for the family than the person who's dead, but it still bothers me.

what about you (and if you're comfortable, what is your age, approximate or otherwise)

It's a XIX century regulation-. And I deeply hate my parents so why even bothering if I know they'll do whatever, I'll just try to get the money lost in due time so they get nothing from me and that's it...

So I haven't bothered either even if not for the same reasons.

It depends where you live. In the USA, there is some states that allow holographic wills. This means writing it yourself with your hand and a pen. It only would need your signature. That is what I am going to do. There is also templates that can be bought online. In some places you might need two other people as witnesses (if you type it in the computer instead of hand writing). Investigate in your country if hand writing your own is legal. If not, you will have to find a lawyer. He won't share information with anyone as long as you are an adult.

If this is the route you are going, be sure it is WELL in advance of the time you CTB, otherwise it is easily invalidated as one can claim you were not mentally fit to draft a will.

By the time I reach my CTB date, my will will have been in force for over 2 years. I found the easiest solution for me was to hire a lawyer to draft my Will, Healthcare Proxy, Advanced Directive and a power of attorney. He even had an agent designation form for my friend to be responsible for the final disposition of my body when I die.

As @hellispink stated, many templates can be found online, and some templates are even provided for free by the state in which you reside. The only reason I choose a lawyer is because my state required two witnesses, and I needed him to provide this as I don't know two people who I could have asked.

Perhaps you can reach out to an LGBT friendly community based organization - which often have referral lists for attorneys who provide "estate planning" services. Is there someone you trust who could be executor of your will?

I tried to make a will. Not 1 person even cares about me enough to witness the signature on it. (How much effort does it take to write your name on a piece of paper!?) So it's probably not even worth the paper it's written on now!

you can perhaps identify a notary public who can witness for you.

Yes, I have a will. Everything goes to my sister. I have no other siblings and my parents are dead. Better her than the state.

You can get a notary to be a witness I'm pretty sure

I have been thinking of making a will along with a list of where all of my financial assets are for my husband. I don't care if it is easy or not for him to cope, but I do worry about my 3 teen children.
