Or when we die it's like we were never born in the first place?

The above is certanly a possibility but sometimes I think it's odd that we are here in the first place. How odd is life, when you come to think about it.

In the grand scheme of things no and even with my extremely pessimistic view nothing really does matter with anything and everything including life, death, nothingness, etc. But I remember hearing somewhere maybe a philosophy video that if nothing matters then it's really up to us to decide if nothing matters or if anything matters if that makes sense. Maybe that sounds too cliche. Sorry I'm going through an improvement phase.

I don't believe anything truly matters, and I don't just mean our lives or our planet.
But I do believe it matters to us and maybe even matters to other creatures.
However once we're here we do tend to make changes to the lives of other people, so it's not as if we were never born.
But I hope more than anything it's as if we were never born. For ourselves.

It does make sense. I think this is existentialism. There is no point. Each person has to decide on their own point.

From the perspective of the universe nothing really "matters". The concept of mattering is made up by us. The universe is just a mindless chaotic place governed by strange laws we will never truly be able to understand.

But from the perspective of humans, more specifically my perspective, there is one thing that matters to me, and that is suffering. I think suffering in any form should be taken seriously and sought to be decreased/eliminated. (I'm a negative utilitarianist)

What a great question. I am glad you asked. If we are completely objective about our lives then we can conclude that it is pretty meaningless. Human civilization is only about 10,000 years old. Compared to the age of the universe which over 14 billion years. Scientists estimate the universe will come to an end in another 20-30 billion years.

Now compare that to the average lifespan of a human which approximately 70 years according to the UN. We are just a temporary blip on some tiny floating rock located in a remote corner of the universe. I have been watching a lot of youtube videos on astrophysics lately and it is crazy how insignificant we really are.

Yeah I agree with this. In the larger scheme of beyond one's lifetime I don't think most of us matter, but to those of us alive together right now we matter a lot to each other.

These are not relevant to each other, per se. We can think that temporary things matter.
How odd is life, when you come to think about it.
As odd as anything else, I guess.

My view is that "meaning" is a really shitty concept that has no basis in reality. Same case with "consciousness", shit doesn't exist and causes a lot of problems when trying to square things. "Omg how can we define consciousness it's so mysterious!?".

In my view, whoever sees humans as glorified calculators will come up with the right answers.

It's all subjective to the individual really..

If the theories regarding the size and age of our universe are in any way correct, then the entire history of humanity would fit into an absolutely minuscule piece of it. You could argue that makes everything pretty pointless.

On the other hand I can think of many famous and influential people who have been dead a long time, but I still feel some strange connection to them, like they really mattered. I think we have all mattered to someone, at some time, even if it was for a very small time. I guess the same goes for significant events in history, whether those are things that happened in our life, or before we were born. I'm sure we all have certain dates and locations that stick in our mind, for good or for bad.

I guess what i'm trying to say is that some things do matter, but it's likely we all have a different perception of by how much, if at all.. and that's okay✌️

As the person above said, it's subjective

Everything matters and nothing matters, I think both can be true, depends who you ask and in what context

I need to stop myself thinking too much about this stuff though or else my brain will start to hurt and I'll end up in another existential crisis lol

If from a philosophical point of view, I believe it is subjective. What matters and what doesnt all depends on you. Like I could say that when we die, instead of it like not being born at all, we will be repeating life again and our past experiences be reflected as deja vu. A person could then find this having meaning as it might be relatable to them therefore matters or they dont believr in it therefore it doesnt matter. 🙂

No, I don't think anything matters. I hope death will erase everything and when I die and cease to exist it will be as if the world ceases to exist for me. Everything will be gone and forgotten. I think it's good that way. It would be a burden to remember everything and perhaps most of all the things I failed to do.

Nothing really means anything, but it's extremely hard not to forget that. Our poor brains are wired to create meaning from chaos; they see patterns & stories even where there are none. It's impossible for us to be truly objective & rational. It's unbelievably difficult to be indifferent to ourselves & the people relevant to us. We either love or hate (or both) ourselves & them.

I believe that nothing really matters, life is just a pointless experience that we go through for the sake of it. Life is just meaningless suffering, we are only here because people decided to selfishly procreate. Everything we do is just a distraction from death. All we are doing is waiting around to die. Things may seem to matter to us in the short term, but eventually we will all die and be unable to experience anything. I believe there is no point to living.

The only things that matter are things that we assign meaning to. Personally, I have a lot that matters to me and sometimes I wonder if all the "positives" of dying truly out way the negatives, which is losing the things that I have assigned that meaning to.

Not even the entire Milky Way galaxy matters, given enough time or distance. So if 100 to 400 billion stars don't make a difference in the grand scheme of things, how much can one person out of 7.8 billion alive today, who will live less than 1/140,000,000 the current age of the universe, on one planet, floating around one star?

Point is, none of us will ever make the slightest bit of difference.

Yeah I agree with this. In the larger scheme of beyond one's lifetime I don't think most of us matter, but to those of us alive together right now we matter a lot to each other.
This and this. Suffering is a very real thing that we all experience, so I'm a strong believer in reducing suffering or not irrevocably messing up the planet we live on for future generations (conservation).

I think better health & mental care would relieve a lot of suffering here. I think more kindness & love would relieve a lot of suffering here. I think better financial security would potentially relieve a lot of suffering here. Most people can probably relate to at least one of those three as a possible quality of life improvement.

In the grand scheme of things we don't make any difference, but with respect to humans all suffering together, the actions and inactions of the human race does.

At the end of the day if I just reduced the suffering of romantic interest/s it would be enough, but there is also a latent responsibility to do more than that if possible. People are generally driven by a desire to fulfill internal needs and that's potentially true for everyone. Even people that help others are potentially fulfilling an internal need or desire.
