Hooray, i got approved to join! Perhaps an odd first message. I have plenty of things I'd like to discuss and ask questions about, but will try to go about it gradually.

I've wanted to ctb since I was a teenager (at least 20 years ago), and as I've been trying to come up with a fool-proof plan this time around, assuming I can overcome my SI, I started to wonder about the efficacy of having a DNR established. Dr. Google gives mixed results on the topic (including some scientific papers that simply conclude 'it's complicated').

Does anyone here have personal experience with a DNR? Or perhaps work in a field (medical, legal, etc) that could provide some insight on how they are handled in the context of ctb?

I didn't see any rules against bumping a thread, if there are and I missed them I apologize in advance. Anyone out there with any insight on this?

I have a DNR but have no idea how that works with regard to ctb. I would think they would have to honor your request, however I have seen notices hanging in doctor's offices that say they will attempt to resuscitate and transfer you to the nearest hospital. Seems a bit duplicitous. You can choose unless I don't approve and then I can do what I want. 🙄

Ya, it is unfortunate that any medical privider can decide to override your personal choices and consent in medical treatment and there are not severe consequences. My mom signed a DNR after her stroke and I am grateful to the medical staff that treated her as she passed that honored her wishes and allowed her to die peacefully in her sleep at the hospital rather than trying extreme life saving measures. Quality of life, and death, really do matter.

I'm not any kind of expert or anything but I have heard from multiple sources that a DNR is not honored in suicide attempts here in the US. I am sure where you live makes a big difference. Probably have to check in your local area or country for laws or regulations regarding that.

I was afraid that was the case. That is extremely frustrating, but not all together surprising considering the social stigma attached to ctb. It's like people just cannot fathom a world where there is a justified reason for it.
