Does your family have some dark secrets which are not much talked about?

When I was about 15 or 16 my depression periods started and after one unpleasant incident my parents realized something is wrong with me. They were really scared and worried about me, mainly because of the dark secret of our family.

My gradpa had a brother who suffered with bipolar disorder. He had three sons and was married. One night he was at the pub with friends and they told him that his wife cheated on him and his sons aren't in fact his own. He became mad, went home and started to massacre his sons with an axe. Two died, one escaped. He was diagnosed with BD and didn't go to jail but to some institute. His wife and youngest son still visited him – maybe his wife felt guilty because the rumors were true, maybe because they weren't and she really loved him.

Anyway I've never been told about a fact that my gradpa had a brother which is pretty odd in our family. We live in a small village and I know every member of our family to the third knee. My mum told me the story only because she and my dad thought I suffer with BD too and if nothing wrong happened to me they would probably never told me.

My grandmother from my dad side done some successful and remarkable witchcraft to the point where she influenced other people's lives (not evil tho all in good intentions) but she was allegedly pretty much capable of things we don't talk about now.
My older brother committed suicide but my family to this day denies the incident and try so hard to pass it as a natural death. As we live in a religious society and things like suicide is considered a disgrace and a scandal for the family so they don't talk about it or acknowledge it to protect their "reputation"

My family is strongly religious too. Their opinion on suicide and genreally one-way, indisputable view on every matter is really irritating. All my life I was afraid to talk with them about almost anything.

Every family has "dark secrets." I think you'd be hard pressed to find one that doesn't. Some obviously may have more/worse ones then others though.

There's some fucked up history in my family but I'd rather not get into it. I applaud the op for sharing. But I don't like to talk about other peoples secrets or traumas.

My family absolutely think of me as the dark secret.. with my history of overdoses, abortions, bisexuality, mental illness etc etc. My mum even said to me not to tell other people in the family like she's embarrassed.

They think I'm the darkest secret (it's not even a secret because everyone thinks I'm evil and they're such good people huh) but I know someone ran away from another state because of some huge debt they got with someone you shouldn't mess with. Someone had a bastard kid on the 70s but denies it. Someone is 17 and got an abortion recently. Another person used to beg for money when they were a kid, and that explains why they're always asking people for stuff even when they don't need it. Said person also likes to appear a good Christian with a good heart but it's a heartless bitch and talks shit about everyone, to the point of ruining a life. I could spend the rest of the day spilling the secrets of these perfect people and that wouldn't be it all.

This thread and the comments remind me of a couple of quotes:

"Count yourself really happy when you are able to live in public, when your walls protect rather than hide you -- though for the most part we regard our walls as around us not so that we may live more safely but so that we may sin more privately. I'll tell you a fact by which you can judge our conduct: you will scarcely find anyone who could live with his door open."

- Seneca

"It is a rare life that maintains its good order even in private. Everyone can play his role and act the honest man on the stage; but to be well-managed within, in his own breast, where everything is allowed and where everything is hidden -- that is the point. The next closest thing is to be this way in your house in your ordinary behavior, for which you are accountable to no one, and where there is nothing studied or artificial."

- Montaigne
