Since this is SS's Cat Central, I have a question for those of you who may be cat people, about scratching: does it always happen that an indoor cat will inevitably scratch the life out of everything you own?

I have, in the back of my mind, that if my life magically gets better and I don't ctb, that I'll get a cat. I had a dog but he was too needy and it hard on him when I went to work - a cat probably couldn't wait until I left - problem solved! But I don't want everything I own to be damaged by a cat's natural instinct and urges. In Canada, I believe cats are no longer de-clawed so how could I live with a cat and not have everything destroyed? Or could I?

Well it depends on the cat. There are scratching posts or boards u can buy that can help.There are all kinds . U can sprinkle it will catnip. All my cats over the years loved scratching boards.

Matt my cat now doesn't like scratching boards or posts. He rarely scratches the carpet though.There is a spot by the bottom of the stairs he will scratch once in a while. He doesn't scratch much now that he is elderly. Putting double sided tape on the carpet helps.

Clipping his nails regularly helps. Also u can buy nail caps too.They come in all different colors.

Clapping or spraying water as a last resort can help too. At the same time this can cause the kitty to be afraid of u.

In my experience, they'll only scratch things if you let them out of the microwave.
Btw, it sounds so nice that you do think about maybe cat'ing instead of ctb'ing, even if just as a possibility which would require magic's intervention.
