My original plan of CTB with N seems increasingly impractical. My fall-back is an exit bag. But there's one big catch - I live in an apartment (no roommates). How am I to justify having a massive canister of gas delivered to my apartment, of all places? The usual excuses of brewing, welding, and mixing with paint don't seem too plausible there.

I saw a similar thread here but it got no replies.

Why can't you just say, you're interested in brewing your own beer and if they ask, "here?" Say no, at a friends but when I ordered this, I put my address for shipping...or say you're mixing paint for family whose renovating their home. You may be surprised, but maybe no body will say anything at all.

If other residents ask (or a super intendant) you could tell them it's medical oxygen for your friend/relative who is coming to stay w you for a while after recovering from COVID and they still need oxygen at night.

The delivery people … yeah… like others suggested: brewing beer or just receiving the canister but doing the work off site at a friend's place?

It's one of my issues as well.
I'm wondering if 2x 20lb are the way to go. They are small enough to be carried inside one by one, covered in a blanket and maybe propped up in a shopping trolley.

2x 20 is a decent idea. I presume you could make that work by setting the flow rate on each to be half of what's standardly recommended?

I wish people talked about this method around here more. It seems to be a really great one but doesn't get much love.

That's what I was thinking too. It's more expensive, needing two regulators and such, but I need to scour the forum a bit more to find out if anyone mentioned this and if it could work.

Yeah, it's a good idea! I'm doing searches on the forum for "inert gas" and "exit bag" and slowly working my way through. But if you find something on this in particular (and if you remember this convo), could you pass that info along?

Why would you need a cover story. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

I've read elsewhere on the forums that sellers may require you to give a convincing reason of why you need it. I'm also worried about my apartment complex raising alarms or even calling the police over a "suspicious" package or whatever. Even if those are unlikely scenarios, I feel more comfortable having all my bases covered and a plan in place.

And many apartments have a rule that forbids bringing gas cylinders (usually propane BBQ cylinders) indoors.

You could say you are a diver and need the gas to make a diving mix, just buy some convincing diving gear.

Or say that you have very important things or documents that you want to preserve.

For me, I would say that I like to collect elements and I need the inert gas to stop my elements from oxidizing. But you can also say you are a avid coin collector!

It's going to be hard to come up with a believable excuse for delivering a large canister of nitrogen to your apartment if you are not a welder or something.

The only thing I can think of would be, preserving food. It's unlikely a person in an apartment is doing welding. It is more believable that you're a doomsday prep-er, who will be doing some preserving.

Maybe research using nitrogen gas to preserve food in advance just in case.

I would not suggest the exit bag method, but helium or nitrogen with diving mask and regulator. I can send you a guide with photos, if you want.
You don´t need a "massive canister" of gas. You only need a small refillable 5 liters gas cylinder, if you choose the diving mask method.

Could you elaborate on why you see this as preferable?

The tried and true method is an Exit Bag not a diving mask set*up.

There are inherent defects to using a scuba diving mask set*up. These pros and cons are discussed at length.

Please educate yourself using the megathread about inert gases and exit bag. It's a very informative read.

NO shortness of breath and NO feeling of suffocation, as CO2 continues to be exhaled.

Inhalation of pure helium or nitrogen that is not enriched by exhaled breathing air (with oxygen and CO2).

No risk of failure due to uncontrolled movements during unconsciousness or slackening of the muscles and a resulting change in body position.

No danger to other persons due to escaping gas.

Unconsciousness occurs very quickly (only a few breaths).

Death after approximately 3 minutes in painless unconsciousness.

I do not have to educate my self about intert gases. The method with the diving equipment was developed and tested because too many people failed with the exit bag. So why continue to use an outdated, unreliable method when there is a better one.

@befree Can you post the guide/info here? The mask sounds more convenient. I've scoured this site and have yet to speak with anyone that has links, specific and precise info A to Z. They only defer to the one or two cases like the guy in the hotel. The article has photos of him lying flat on his back. Also, they tend not to be sure of the hookup and varying pieces needed for the mask to be utilized. Nor where to locate said pieces. I disagree the exit bag is unreliable. Too many people have died using it. I think it's more user error and since people have a hard time understanding even the bag (esp the regulator) I'd love to chat with you more about the mask set up. I look forward to your reply. Hopefully you can educate me as well as others on the site? Hope all is well, thnx in advance.

If anyone asks, say a friend of yours needs it for one of the reasons above and is out of town and asked you to accept it.
