Honestly, it depends on a community by community basis how to handle these things.

Mods are people too so there's no harm in playing along for a while (and only for a while for the sake of maintaining order in the forum). At the end of the day the thread will have to be locked / deleted because it isn't actually conducive to conversation (at least in where it's posted -- suicide discussion).

What you could do (if permitted by head mod / admin if such a chain of command exists in SaSu) is just state intention of when thread will go down, maybe give another 30-60 minutes. Let people blow off steam, then delete thread later. That way you do your job, but also let people get it out of their system.

Else, just pull the trigger. No one is going to actually be upset. We know we're being silly and completely out-of-pocket.

It's rough being new, I totally get it. Reminds me when I did moderation for a multi-national gaming community that hosted their own servers. Always encountering situations that force me to decide "when do I step in?"

But it's a very human problem to decide when the fun ends and I don't think anyone actually has a concrete answer. That's usually why SOPs exist to make the decision making portion much less difficult. Especially because everyone has their own levels of tolerance for things. Some people snip the bud before it blooms, others wait for it to die naturally before stepping in.

I think that is a good idea, moving off topic discussions to the relevant forum. It used to be Methods, Venting, Offtopic... but now it is Discussion and Offtopic. I think other filler content is left to make it harder for the journalists to sift thru information, as well as give a sense of plausible deniability (no active effort to curate the CTB info in one place) but idk.
