To preface, I know practically nothing about guns. This is from my deceased grandfather. It seems to be fully loaded already?

I know the ideal area to shoot is the roof of the mouth, right? Does anyone know where exactly on the roof? Does it matter?

I appreciate any advice or info. I don't want to use it unless I know for sure it'll work.

It's not super powerful but should be enough. As for aiming I'd say search the threads here. Certainly a debate

Lovely .38 special. I'm insanely jealous, they remind me of those 50's detectives. That calibre and style of pistol was standard issue in most police forces in the US until about the 90's to late 80s when they switched to semi automatic for a larger magazine size and quicker firing rate as criminals carried more and more dangerous things and they needed to compete.

So yes, it would do the job. If it was good enough in the US Police arsenal for about 50 years give or take, it's good enough for this.

You could realistically do this with a .22., .38 special with a snubbed nose will have a little less velocity than full size but the energy at point blank wouldn't matter.

Looks sick, guns should do the job aslong as the bullet penetrates your brain! Id just put it to my forehead or side of the head, but im not too sure myself. Good luck!!

I'm not entirely sure. A .22 can absolutely be lethal and as a matter of a fact I believe they're used most in murders in the world, BUT those take a few shots. If you can fire it without your ears ringing when not wearing ear pro I wouldn't use it. Hold off on that for now.

Looks a little small for my liking. I wouldn't choose it if I were going to purchase one for ctb. Still, it could work. It's better than a .22.

I might use it by the end of the month or in March. I appreciate all the answers. I don't have access to a better gun, so I'll just have to hope this will be enough.

Like I said it was standard issue for quite some time. People who are saying "don't use it" are the same people who don't know what the barrel twist rate is. Or really have any experience in ballistics.

About a thousand people die a year from .38 special. Only because it's vintage. Nothing to do with its ballistic profile or any other reason, just because nobody uses revolvers that much anymore. A lot of people have these but wouldn't daily carry them.

Why? Semi auto exists, it's literally just vintage, it's like saying "don't use 30-06, because it's old"

TL;Dr .38 special will most likely work at the end of the day if pressed against the skull that's a lot of hot gases and a literal chunk of lead ripping through soft brain tissue.

I see. Do you think the roof of the mouth is good? Or is there somewhere else that would be better? Sorry for the bother, and thanks for the help.

You keep commenting about "the roof of the mouth". Depending on how the muzzle of the gun is angled at the roof of your mouth is terribly important. Angled one way and all you are gonna do is disfigure yourself, be blind and probably give yourself a frontal lobotomy. Angled another and again you will handicap yourself, but you will not die. The ANGLE of your shot is much more important than a lot of people think.

I'm sorry I am not gonna give you specific information on how to kill yourself -- I am a hypocrite that way -- but I also would hate to hear you tried and only managed to main yourself because no one told you the "roof of your mouth" was a bad place to aim for.

I appreciate the response, I'll keep this in mind. I'm going in rather blind here.

I don't know if anyone will read this; I'm mostly typing this out to let out built-up feelings.

It didn't go well. I tried to shoot myself a day after my last post. I put the gun to my head and pulled the trigger three or four separate times, but nothing happened. I had never shot a gun before, and I really didn't know what I was doing.

I won't go into all the details, but I did eventually figure out how to shoot it; but not without accidentally shooting a hole in my bedroom door. It all happened in what felt like an instant. I didn't even know what I had shot at first, before wildly looking around and seeing the hole. The whole room smelled like fire and for several minutes I couldn't hear anything at all. There was nothing but ringing.

I know I could be accused of being a coward for not just shooting myself when I had figured out how to, and I hate myself for not doing it now. I was just so scared. And because of my incompetence I ended up in the mental hospital for a week, reliving all the trauma I experienced a decade ago.

I was told by my grandmother that a relative took the gun. I don't know if he still has it or if he gave it back to my grandmother. If it's the latter, she's most definitely tried to hide it somewhere and it probably has the safety lock on, from what little I remember of our conversation (I was really out of it and medicated when we talked).

Every single day since then, I've been obsessing over the what ifs. What if I had managed to successfully shoot myself? Would it have been enough or would I be essentially a vegetable in the hospital right now? I don't know. But most days I really wish I had just done it when I had the chance. It may have been the only opportunity I'll ever have to use it, and I blew it. I failed, just like with everything else in my life. And now it feels like I'm left with nothing. I know it's my fault, but I can't describe how hopeless and desperate I feel.
