Meaning it's extremely dangerous and prospects are uncertain. First there is the escape itself: it can fail in a number of ways, and if it does, the consequences are severe. May be a myth, but I read somewhere that fugitive slaves in the Roman Empire had their feet cut off, for example. In our days you will be herded away to some psych ward to undergo mental torture. Or you might become paralyzed, lose your sight, or whatever else.
The second thing is the aftermath. Even if you escape successfully, it doesn't at all mean that you are free. You might end up in a situation much worse than the one you tried to escape from.
