The Full Chamber of the Constitutional Court gave medically assisted suicide viability. This step in health matters means that from now on Colombians will be able to have a dignified death under this mechanism.
This procedure basically means that each person will be able to decide on her own death in an open manner and without being penalized. The viability of the practice being carried out by the patient himself, but with a prior medical concept, is what differentiates it from euthanasia, since in the latter it is always carried out by a health professional.
When does it apply?
According to the decision of the judicial corporation, medically assisted suicide may be governed under certain parameters. The first is that it is allowed to be applied when the patient is duly diagnosed with a serious and incurable bodily injury or illness.
The other has to do with intense physical or psychic pain and that due to them there is an incompatibility with the precept of a dignified life. In any case, to endorse this procedure, a medical concept must be mediated to corroborate that the patient is under any of these causes.
