Hello everyone, so as some of you might remember I was on Lamotrigine a few weeks ago, and all Your comments said, it didn't help with sleep. So now the doc put me on Cloropromazine 25mg. Before I take it, I would highly appreciate any thoughts on this from someone who takes it or taken it, Does it actually help with sleep? All the leaflet says is that's its an anti psychotic. I do not suffer from that condition. So is it a good viable medication to sleep or should I stay away from it? Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

I'd check out wiki. Its considered a 'dirty drug' as it affects lots of different systems in the brain, therefore lots of potential side effects.

The sedative effects it has is like that of antihistamines - have you tried any sedating antihistamines for your sleeplessness at all? They might be better suited with less potential for side effects.

Yeah I've checked it online. Scary things I've read. Why docs keep on prescribing rubbish!!!

Are they trying to treat other conditions you have at the same time? That would make some sense, but otherwise I dunno, its more than a bit scary.

Antipsychotics can be scary. I'm not sure, but I think that's part of the reason I ended up with my mental illness. It might've been too powerful for my brain.

Hi I was on it during a stay in hospital it was an orange liquid (also known as largactyl) and as far as I was aware it's been banned under dangerous drugs laws. I don't sleep well so forgive my foggy brain. If you have trouble sleeping you can try Nytol over the counter. A month supply in the box. Or the liquid one, I've not tried that yet.

I take it (in combination with Covonia cough syrup mixed with some hot water) and it knocks me out, though I live in state of exhaustion to point of overtired so I would have imagined I would sleep but plumbing noise and vibrations stop that.

Try Nytol but ask the pharmacist first if you take other medicine as some can interact. No idea why you were prescribed chlorpromazine, it's a piece of shit and caused me to fear my own pillow FFS.

Can't remember what the docs in the ward did but I assume the dose was reduced or something. But I know it's banned. Or was.

I'm gonna stick with Benzos.

Thanks for the tip, I won't take it then. Can you believe it costed 25 cents where I'm from? A box of 60. Unfortunately I'm so hooked on benzos and sleeping pills that OTC does nothing to me.

Oh no. Is it possible you can ask a pharmacist how to lessen some of what you addicted to so you might try some OTC?

You can do a search on the web type your doctors name and see what the medical trust / say about them. Maybe try dr (name/ practice name / reviews/ ) to start with. Maybe look up the medical licence place and email them a concern ? Just a thought.
I have a nose for information regarding docs or medical anything with issues that bring up a red flag like this.

Well they only have natural stuff like melatonin and valerian root. Being so hooked on benzos I will spend a couple of weeks sleepless even with those. But thanks for the thumbs up. Hugs.

You're welcome.
That sucks. Can you change some other things to try alleviate? Are you stressed when you go to bed?

I know I'm not in your place so I'm only going from afar judgements ..
Eg what helps make you sleepy? Bananas are supposed to be helpful, warm milk at bedtime?

Oh I meant search on line the doctor to try find out his reviews. If he's a loser just tossing drugs and not caring about patients. That's what I meant.

My head goes a million miles an hour before sleeping, I thing of past things PTSD, he's ok he just can't sort my sleep. Guess I have to fight that one by myself hun. I was once taking 10-20 Xanax one some days. Now I'm down to 3 a day. One step at a time I guess.

Oh crap. Same here with CPTSD. It's an asshole in my head some days. How do you unwind?
Btw Chlorpromazine is over 50 years old according to this old page; it's more a bragging thing but I thought you might be interested.

Just wonder if your doc was lazy or not moving with the medicine times? Just a guess.

How to I unwind? That's a good question, all the things that give me some pleasure before don't do it for me anymore. Works helps a bit, being here helps a million times. I guess I'm just to hard on myself, I wanna quit everything "for yesterday " if you know what I mean. I know my doc is just trying to help his way. So I do my research he knows I'm an informed patient. He threads on eggshells with me cause of that.

Hi I get what you mean it's like you want to rewind time?
As you are one step at a time would you find it easier with an app? There's one I use it's called Focus Wheel
If you type it in the App Store it will come up.
How it works is, In a circle there's 12 segments and in the middle you put your goal.
I like the part after writing a step it says "stick it" then you add it to the wheel. Makes me laugh if someone has got me angry. Small things matter when you are over loaded with stress. There are some apps for me to health but watch out for the subscription ones. Nearly all their information can be found on a good healthcare website. Hugs back at you. PTSD is a bastard. You're not alone

That's awful. Does the prescribing doc know it screwed you up?
I don't think they do. When I was first experiencing symptoms, I contacted them, and they just pushed me off and told me to go inpatient. I didn't bother after that.

I took Chlorpromazine a few times and it turned my brain to mush.

The brand name in the USA is Thorazine and here in Australia and I'm guessing the UK, Largactil. It often comes in a kind of elixer that you drink. It's the oldest antipsychotic. It tends to cause drowsiness but I haven't heard of it being used for insomnia before. More for psychotic inpatients.

Sorry to hear that. I know it's banned. You wouldn't think so by the absence of warnings on the web though now.

Hi yes you're right about the Largactyl Uk name. I was treated as paychotic, but the docs weren't interested in what I had suffered.

Only when I managed years later to get hold of my file did I realise that they knew, as it was in the file "not safe to be left alone with the father."

The day I read those words I had both a chill for the horrible truth and a comforted feeling, that they knew, (right down to him marrying a submissive woman) albeit belatedly that they were nasty people whom abused me.

Shame nobody gave me that affirmation on admission or the next day when I was slightly less agitated.
It did not have lasting effects, but I was pretty much zombiefied while I was on it.
Same here. I believe from what I have read in various places they drug people up to avoid dealing with painful issues, even though the truth is that WE as patients need to talk about painful things.

If you read a book by Alice Miller (there's quite a few) you will see how she breaks it down. Fear of the truth is rife in psychiatry, sadly.
Thanks I will check up that app. Thank you for all your help. Have a good weekend.
Thanks love you too. I managed a bath tonight so it's looking a better weekend now. I would like to know if you find it helpful. I'm not linked to them but it's a good guide.

Also I am using CBT Diary / free version. Daily notes on how I feel and the emoji for the mood helps me keep track of where I am mood wise. You have a good weekend too.

Quite sure it's not banned. Fellow patients were on it when I was inpatient.
I remember it being banned. Maybe you're not reading the same items as I did? It's no big deal I just shared what I saw in medical items. Was a few years ago.
It's still harmful whichever way it's viewed.
