15. Ludwig van Beethoven. Sonata №29, part 3

This — this means much more than some sUiCiDaL iDeAtIoN. This is how eternity should sound. It is not the first piece that I'd go to when I'm feeling down or something — but it's worth listening to. Maybe you will understand it better than I do.
Isn't saying "cold Russian winter" a little redundant? :pfff:
well, i was in russia, it was winter, and it was cold 🤷🏻

16. Wolfgang Mozart. Adagio K540

According to the entry in Mozart's personal work catalogue, the Adagio
in b minor K540 was completed on 19 March 1788, thus at a time when Mozart's personal (and, above all, financial) situation was increasingly deteriorating. Personally, I hope that crystal-sounding sadness of this Adagio can bring someone a peace of mind.

17. Sergei Taneyev. «John of Damascus», part 1 (part 2 and 3 are really great too)

«I tread an unknown path chagrined,
I walk that wire twixt fear and hope;
My breast grown cold, my eyesight dimmed,
I tremble on that dread tightrope.
I lie stock-still, my voice a croak,
My brother's sobs I cannot hear,
And not for me the dove-blue smoke
That wafts from censer past my bier»

18. Franz Schubert. «Winterreise»: «Irrlicht» (Will-o'-the-wisp)

If you're going to kill yourself, «Winterreise» — one of the greatest vocal cycles of all time — should be in your playlist, trust me.

«Into the deepest mountain chasms
A will-o'-the-wisp lured me;
How to find a way out
Doesn't worry me much.
I'm used to going astray,
And every way leads to the goal.
Our joys, our sorrows
Are all a will-o'-the-wisp's game!
Through the mountain stream's dry channel
I wind my way calmly downward.
Every river finds its way to the ocean,
And every sorrow to its grave»

19. Franz Schubert. «Winterreise»: «Im Dorfe» (In the village)

«The dogs are barking, the chains are rattling;
The people are sleeping in their beds,
Dreaming of things they don't have,
Refreshing themselves in good and bad.
And in the morning all will have vanished.
Oh well, they had their share of pleasure
And hope that what they missed
Can be found again on their pillows…
Drive me out with your barking, you vigilant dogs,
Don't let me rest when it's time for slumber.
I am finished with all my dreams.
Why should I linger among the sleepers?»

20. Robert Schumann. «Geistervariationen» (Ghost variations)

Schumann started writing this piece, than got up and — without changing from his home clothes — went to the nearest bridge. There he attempted suicide by drowning, was rescued, and after a few days he continued working on this variations. This was his last piano piece.

21. Alexander Scriabin. Sonata №1, part 4 (listening to the whole sonata is recommended)

Scriabin damaged his right hand by overpracticing [on the piano]; physicians told him that he would never play again. This piano sonata was Scriabin's personal cry against God: the tragedy of the loss of a virtuoso pianist to whimsical fate. Part 4 is a funeral march of rare beauty.

22. Nicola Porpora. «Polifemo»: «Alto Giove»

warning: in this performance a part is cut out but i still like it the most

Jupiter, i praise you, o valiant, for the great gift
of life eternal, the sigh of your favour to me.
But if you give me a tender and gorgeous lover that i long for so much, it will be a gift as incomparable as your beauty is.
Well, damn.
don't worry, he recovered!

23. Ludwig Berger. «Die schone Mullerin» (don't mix it up with Schubert's vocal cycle of the same name!) —«Des Baches Lied»

Lyrics start with words:

«Rest well, rest well!
Close your eyes!
Weary wanderer, this is your home.
Here is constancy;
you shall lie with me,
until the sea drinks up all brooks»,

and the rest can be googled.

«When I am laid in earth,
May my wrongs create
No trouble in thy breast.
Remember me, but ah! forget my fate»

maybe a tricky peace cause i guess it also can be seen as very beautiful. but in the mood of death such beauty also can be so bitter sweet that it drags you down even more.

more filmmusic than classic but with a classic instrumentation.
didn't find the single track but it's "Van den Budenmayer – Funeral music (full orchestra)" - starting from 18:36

I probably listen more to classical music than anything else. Schubert's song cycles already seem to be well represented here, so I won't include them, even though they are excellent choices.

Alfred Schnittke - "Stille Musik"

Purcell - "O Solitude"

Rameau - "Tristes apprêts, pâles flambeaux"
