''Checkmate is a situation in which the King of the players is placed under direct attack and has no way to shelter himself with other pieces or move in a free box from the threat of imminent defeat. Giving checkmate is the primary objective of the game of chess and the game ends with the victory of the player who managed to put in this condition the opposing king. In practice however the experienced player abandons the game before being actually in the checkmate condition. It is indeed considered discourteous to continue to play in a completely hopeless situation.''
I think this analogy is very accurate, unfortunately. Checkmate is the situation in which you realise you are out of moves, you played your game at your best and you tried to save it everytime in every possible way.
With this in mind, in the world of possibilities, and things under your control, if you still could make some more moves, 'chess pieces' to sacrifice to win, keep playing.
To me that's the threshold.
