Carl Sagan was an atheist but he had an almost religious view towards life

.So,we should continue this pointless cycle of life,suffering and death and to ensure this cycle continues indefinitely we should proliferate to other parts of the universe,in case life on earth ends due to some unforeseen cosmic event

It's a practical and scientific line of thinking, one which a man in such line of work is expected to have. Don't know why it should make you lose respect for him. That he doesn't think like us shouldn't mean he's "dumb". And as a die-hard fan of his work, I'm sure he'd be the first to listen to people like us and not dismiss us entirely.
