  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Huh. So after 2023 they MAY open it up to people with solely mental illness. I wonder what their criteria will be if/once they accept that category of person. And I wonder if foreign nationals will be able to access that service or if it's just for Canadian nationals. Thanks for sharing

Because there are 50 different states in the US, most of which don't even allow it for terminally ill patients.

Unfortunately that while pro choice extends to abortions and administrating puberty blockers for transgender children, it doesn't to our right to die Yeah, that's too based and progressive even for the US.

It won't be by private clinic, so no, you can't pop over and pop off. It's not available in the U.S. because, well, it's just not that progressive. It will come though, in certain states…

....you think that is unfortunate?
Nah, I just think it's unfortunate that the line is drawn at our right to die. I apologize for the bad wording.

Only for Canadians or permanent residents who are covered by provincial healthcare.
Sorry.

At least partly because there is money to be made off of other people's suffering.

This would never happen in the US. They make you go through hell if you're just trying to get on disability.

They don't care for anyone whose struggling mentally and trying to get better, mental health programs have horrible and next to no funding to begin with. So I can't see them trying to assist anyone who's unfortunately at a much lower point.

You would think this would be incredibly important stuff to look at and care about, but it's not and it's sucks.

I misread the initial article - it IS now legal in Canada. I'm going to research qualifying criteria and see if US citizens are also able to qualify.

More info- (from a source that isn't exactly excited about this lol)

I think I read somewhere it is only open to Canadian citizens that are part of their medical program. I bet theyll be a vetting process for sure when it comes to "sound mind"

To be fair, guns are a thing you can get in the USA so americans sort of have assisted suicide. Sure it could be messy but if you put your head in a bag, use a .45 pistol or something and cover your room with sheets it wont be messy

It won't be easy to qualify.
Rules are put in place by March 2023 that will require proof not only that a patient is "suffering irremediably" but also that all treatment options have been tried.

Anyone who hasn't gone through years of meds and therapies won't be eligible.

They are also looking into rules to exclude people with depression, since their decision to want to die is considered "irrational" and due to the illness itself (as in depression causing suicidality).

Requirements will likely be similar to what is now in place in Benelux countries.

And then there are simply not enough doctors who are willing to even assess MAID applicants.

I do hate all the specific rules and regulations surrounding maid services in Canada. There are so many Ts to cross and I's to dot. What frustrates me the most is how others who don't share your decision not to want to live may jeopardize getting proper access to MAID.

depends on if you've been institutionalized at a psych ward, they can waive your right to buy one.

Access to guns in Canada is not impossible, just more difficult than the US. Too many regulations once again! Also, for individuals without firearm training, that could mean blowing their head off but still surviving albeit without half of their face/head. Of course that can also happen to those with training.

That only happens if you shoot yourself from the chin like in movies, to actually die via a gun you need to put the gun up to your brainstem
iu

If you use .45 acp or greater your chance of surviving a bullet to the brain stem is 1%, you're better off wining the lottery

Because the USA makes too much money off of suicidal people. The cash out for locking up a person for being suicidal, having failed attempts, then shoving medications and therapy down their throat is astronomical. If america allowed assisted suicide for mentally ill people, they'd lose a lot of profits in forcing the severely mentally ill to do treatments that don't work over and over again.

I think it will get easier over time. Just like at first a panel of doctors was required to allow abortion and now it's not required.

I read a while ago that they're trying to get it legalized in Oregon but that was supposed to happen this year so no idea if that's gonna be a thing.
