my old self may have said yes, when my drug use was consistent with the self medication of addictive and often expensive substances. I have spent my money on material things I am attached to. car, clothes, vinyl records, sunglasses etc.
but nothing fills the void, and necessities and collections are not what I imagine when people say 'money buys happiness.' I don't have much money either but I do have the aforementioned things and a roof over my head.

just got recent news that my family is receiving a financial settlement from the federal government. someone in my family died of cancer that was a result of 30 years of working near radioactive material in a government facility. his death was 25 years ago, but the government is only just now accepting the responsibility of removing said materials from the site. and the state, as well as those affected by the radiation, are receiving settlements. I am being purposefully vague, but if you are curious about similar settlements look into EEOICPA.

my CTB has felt close for a while. but the entitlement benefits will be realized beginning/middle of next year. I could change some things. get a new place, have more solid ground for paying tuition, or even get access to treatments I once was not able to afford. can money make me happy? should I at least wait to receive a portion before passing? has anything you bought drastically made changes in your life which led to happiness?

It could lessen the misery but no, ultimately it cannot. There's no amount of money that could fix me.

This is an interesting one.

On one hand I'd rather be crying in a Ferrari than homeless on the street but flippant comments aside, money cannot solve deep set mental issues such as long-term feelings of depression, effects of abuse, or the psychological effects of long term stress.

Money would solve most practical issues though.

For me 100% yes.
I have great physical health and my mental health problems have only emerged due to self inflicted unemployment at 55 during coronavirus.
If I had more money I'm sure I would be happy, though I couldn't totally guarantee my mental issues would just disappear I'd like to think they'd disappear as quickly as they appeared.
Hopefully I'll win tonight's Euromillions jackpot and be able to test out the theory

None of that shit matters if you're plagued by untreatable mental and physical illness though.
That's such a lie and you know it. A person's life can be made 100x easier with the right amount of money. It could easily help somebody with even the worst emotional and physical pain get by another day. Obviously, it won't cure your issues, but it WILL make dealing with them far more obtainable.

it depends on what makes you miserable. if it's poverty, then yes, money can make you happy. if it's mental issues, then most likely not. although, you could always buy things to forget about those issues, but that's another topic entirely.

It can make your life easier, which can steer you farther from ctb. Suicide is not about lack of happiness, it's about excessive suffering, and there's a huge middle ground between those two. You may not necessarily become happy with more money, but your suffering may be reduced to the point you no longer feel like ctb.

Yes it can buy happiness but the happiness will either quickly or gradually fade away just like the happiness you get from other things since satisfaction decrease as you consume or get used to it more and human want has no end.

Not even close. I don't even care about money. Unfortunately people think you're insane if you think like that. I just want to be happy but I can't even do that due to self hatred. I wish I was either a completely different human being, or dead, so here we are.

I'm considered rich in Italy, which is like being upper middle class in Germany.

I'm aware of my privilege. Which isn't a privilege at all considering how much my mom works, 365 days per year, and how I haven't seen her when I was a kid.
But I'm depressed. Chronically depressed, and no money is fixing me. I'd be glad to give all my money to people who need it (I already do it through taxes and everything else).
I also have a father who's became depressed and a severely depressed cousin (richer than me).
If I was poor I'd probably ctb'd earlier than this, but I think money DOES buy some sort of serenity but not happiness.

I don't think there is a universal answer to this question. It is dependant upon the person your asking and what stage of life/mindset they are currently in. For some yes money can make them happy, for others no. In my personal situation having money right now would make a world of difference and I would 100% try to live...in the future when everyone I know is dead money will mean nothing.

Money can't exactly buy happiness. But there are some people who might have a better chance at happiness had they the money to pursue means to reach happiness. Stable house, financial security, that can help certain people hang in there long enough to find something. Money contributes, I guess is how I would like to say it.

I think maybe it can't directly buy happiness, but it definitely can buy the means to become happy. To some people that's the same thing though.

Humans unfortunately have a tendency to succumb to what's know as the Hedonic Treadmill or the "Happiness Plateau".

"...the observed tendency of humans to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes. According to this theory, as a person makes more money, expectations and desires rise in tandem, which results in no permanent gain in happiness."

HOWEVER, I think people can definitely improve the quality of their lives overall with more money or resources especially if them being unable to procure basic necessities is what's contributing to their unhappiness in the first place. It just won't be a magical cure-all pill to eternal bliss, at least not for everyone.

EDIT: I also think it can't buy happiness for people missing the things money can't buy. If they lost a friend or family member, money won't necessarily make them happier because money can't bring back the dead (not yet at least).

If you don't know the answer to such question then I would want to think that you need to give it a try and find out the answer yourself. No one else can answer such thing on behalf of you. Try to make a good financial decisions with it and see...

Money can make you happy by having all you need and doing whatever you want with it but in the end, people like us, will feel like CTB no matter how rich we are.
Just look at those famous people killing themselves at a young age in spite of being millionaires. Life is weird.
