to me it's just too morbid of a topic, i get nobody is making light of it, and i get the psychology behind only being able to find joy in death... but i just get really cringe emo vibes from reacting with a smiley face to someone saying they want to die

i guess this is my introduction to this forum. i have chronic bronchitis and it's destroyed my life and killed any hope of a future. even if i won the lottery it would not matter, i'm 26 and i'll never be able to be physically active in any capacity again

I see it as a way of saying we empathize with what other people are feeling.

My best wishes for you.

There is a point in depression where one would start finding death to be an incredibly amusing topic. Hilarious, even.

I understand and agree..... it's also a way that I ( and others ) can show Some, if any... remorseful, kindness, understanding.... to whom ever might need it in their time of ultimate Darkness.

@bronchitisguy96 it's not a smiley face it's meant to be a hug isn't it? So people are giving others a virtual hug and a handhold not because they're happy someone wants to die...

yeah, but the hugging emoji still has a huge grin on it's face... it just alters the whole vibe of the site, so much so that i had to double check where i was

thanks everyone for clearing it up

@bronchitisguy96 yeh well now you mention it! I didn't really pay much attention to that, I know the intent behind it. It's just people trying to be empathetic, don't read too much into it!

The fact is that we're all dying because death is inescapable!

The notion that suicidal people are all doomsayers who should avoid using "smiley emojis" irritates me.

Smiley emojis brighten the mood on this site! 🥳😁🤣

I'm not a big fan of them either. I don't mind others using them, and I appreciate others giving those reactions to my posts (I do hope they mean it, though), but when I use them, I just feel fake. I want people to know I'm trying to show compassion; I just wish there weren't overly gushing ones to choose from. The grin-hug blushie face is too romantic-looking, while the heart with love is too strong of a word.

The thumbs up is usually my go to, even if it's a bit cold…😅

Yeah, each emoji has a description. I personally think they're all fine, except the laughing one says "yay". I find that to be odd. It should just be "laughing" or "funny".

It's certainly very cringe, I agree. Shallow and immature emojis don't really belong on a site of this nature, they invalidate the harsh reality of this existence which holds unlimited potential for suffering. It's totally irrational to be "happy" in this hellish world.

sometimes when i dont have the energy to reply to a post i use the hug or heart reaction to show some support and show that i care even if i cant write out a message.
i do wish they were a bit different, like a separate laughing one bc i use the yay one for both as a "yay congrats!" and as a laugh. i always feel weird using the aww one bc that to me feels a bit sarcastic idk. i do also feel a bit weird using the hug one when someone mentions something upsetting bc of how its smiling, but i like to think the poster knows i mean it as an actual virtual hug and not making light of their situation. hope that made sense. i think they can be a good way to show support.

I see why you're never using them. Would you prefer others not to react to your posts?

Same. I don't want to leave without acknowledging that I read the post, but often don't find the right words. It's good that FC often steps in, otherwise many personal threads would stay without replies.

I'm fine with others using them, other people can do what they like, it doesn't bother me. I just prefer words personally as the emojis don't match what I want to say and there's also the chance of clicking on the laughing one by mistake if someone tries to send another one with good intentions.

I don't think talking about suicide is a sad thing.

I think a lot of us are in sad situations and that's sad and serious. I used to be very sad when I wasn't suicidal. I felt sad because I was trapped without any way out. I was using self injury to be able to feel alive and make it through my days.

Now that I'm suicidal I'm often not sad at all. This is my everyday existence of being actively suicidal even on the good days. I don't find it morbid or emo to express the full range of emotions even when discussing suicide.

I appreciate that I don't need to write seriously or sadly to be taken seriously on here.

For me it's about the hug, not the smile. Maybe it's an autistic trait to look at the description rather than the expression, but that's how my mind operates.
