I have never dabbled in bitcoin. I live in California. How much bitcoin should I buy to pay for N since the prices of bitcoin are always fluctuating? Should I also buy bitcoin from paypal or somewhere else? If I have purchased bitcoin via Paypal, how do I send it to D?

I need to follow this, because I'm curious what people will say about buying BTC from paypal vs coinbase etc. From what I read about paypal, you won't be able to store the BTC in cold storage, but that doesn't seem a big problem if you plan to ctb soon after.

I wonder if its easier to buy BTC with paypal?

As for how much, it's probably safer to buy double the amount D asks for. The price fluctuates a lot but not that much in a short period, usually.

Unfortunately you can't send bitcoin outside of PayPal so you'll have to buy crypto from another exchange. When you order from D, he will email the exact bitcoin amount so don't purchase until you order. Hope that helps!

Buy btc on a real exchange like binance, coinbase, kraken etc. Then you can sent or withdrawal the bitcoin to any btc address you want. Just copy past the address.

In D's email, step 2 says, "Indicate the address where the package will arrive AND BY WHAT TYPE OF SHIPPING OFFICE". What does type of shipping office mean?

He means which shipping company/option.

First, you can't really buy BTC through paypal. You can "invest" in BTC - so don't do that. You can't actually use the crypto to buy anything.

Easiest way to get BTC is open a Coinbase account. Link you paypal and bank account to it. The more you do, the faster you get verified. Once you have an active Coinbase account, you can buy BTC using Paypal (instant) or your bank account (about 3 days or less). The Crypto goes right into your Coinbase wallet, and you can transact from there. I have heard that it can be risky to do so, but I have for a while now, and no issues so far. If you're worried, transfer the funds to another wallet and transact from there. There are fees for each transfer, so I recommend getting at least 5% more BTC than the whole transaction needs (Buy $525 if the N costs $500).

Another option is create a crypto wallet on your phone (mycelium, exodus, electrum). Search on craigslist or facebook for face to face transfers. DO NOT do private transfers through email/text/etc. You Venmo/cash app someone money, and I guarantee you're not getting your crypto. Keep in mind, this can be dangerous - you can get robbed very easily, so make sure to bring a friend, and at least one of you be armed. Also, most people won't meet for a face to face for less than $1000, but $5000 min is pretty common. Also also, face to face tends to want about 10% as a transaction fee, plus the transfer fee, so you may only wind up with about $890 in BTC for $1000.

When actually having illicit items shipped to your house - MAKE SURE to use your real name, address, etc. Most of the times when things get intercepted, it's because people ship to a fake name not associated with the address. If you have a UPS Store address, that's even better.

Thanks so much. I'm having some trouble getting this to work. I think I'm almost there. I made a coinbase account and verified my driver's ID to upgrade my account to level 3 so that I can buy and receive crypto. When I try to link my paypal account for a payment method, I get prompted with a message saying, "This PayPal account cannot be linked to Coinbase. Please use a different PayPal account."

I have absolutely NO idea why I'm getting this message. It's so frustrating. Any idea what could be the problem? The alternative payment methods I have are google pay and wire transfer. Is this okay? Will it take long to process?
When was your last reply from him, please?
Sorry, totally didn't see this. I sent a message on Dec 9, he replied the next day on Dec 10.

Not 100%, but it could depend on the amount of time you've had the paypal account, and the confirmed payment methods associated with it. Most importantly, is your paypal in your name alone, verified with a photo id, and have a verified bank account attached to it. If all you have is a credit or debit card, that's the reason.

As for coinbase, I think both bank and wire transactions take a couple days to clear. There are probably very high fees associated with wire transfers. They only make sense for transactions over $10k.

It sounds like you may not have a bank account. I would suggest getting a checking account at a local bank or credit union, or opening an online account with Penfed. Larger banks (for example Wells Fargo) will not let you link your bank account to a coinbase account.

The paypal is under my name. I linked my Bank of America bank and debit card to my paypal account. For the photo id, where do I verify that in paypal? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Sorry.

Exchange is the best bet. Make sure to buy a little more than you need because the prices do fluctate day to day. D also accepts western union if you can't figure it out.

The problem is BoA - they won't allow you to link an account to Coinbase. I don't remember where the license upload was, but I got an email about it after creating an account. Best bet is like I said, open an account at a credit union, link that to paypal, link the credit union and paypal to coinbase.

For California credit union, don't I need to be some kind of school employee, live or work in San Diego, Riverside, Orange County, or have a family member that's already a credit union member? I got none of those things. Why is buying bitcoin so complicated? This doesn't make sense. Seriously just considering train decap at this point.

Regulations for Bitcoin/crypto are kind of a gray area now. Most large financial institutions are very risk averse. Fines very regularly reach into the tens of millions for policy infractions. Banks also risk insurance through the FDIC if they mess up too much.

Also, one of the goals of crypto is to eliminate the need for financial institutions. Think about it, with crypto, you don't need banks or credit cards. Doesn't make sense for them to support a system like this.

There are many credit unions. Most have very few restrictions. Just Google credit unions in your area, and I bet there are several you could join.

That's true. I have a Citi card linked to my PayPal, and use that most of the time on Coinbase, no issue.

Maybe true, but sharing/discussing methods and contacts may make it easier to track down leads if someone is investigating, and can jeopardize options. LEOs may be on already (and unless no new members are being admitted, they could join). There is so much on here, on the other hand, that prospective self-censorship may not do much.

The NYT story was just featured on PBS Newshour. Seems to be sticking around a bit. Hope it dies down soon, no pun intended.

The best way to buy crypto is directly from the exchanges since you get the market rate for it.

However there are many banks that won't let you buy crypto because of some reason.

Private traders will use alternative methods to get you your crypto, like PayPal, Skrill, Stripe, etc...

But you'll definitely pay above market rate to get your crypto from these traders.

Edit: A good site to get your crypto from traders is LocalBitcoins, make sure the trader has at least 1000 trades and a rating above 99%.

It pisses me off that we have to go in hiding. Talking about suicide is not a crime but why are we treated like criminals? That article was just bad journalism. Calling this place a death cult is a blatant lie. This is the only place I found that I could have an honest conversation about death, suicide and non-existence. Everyone is going to die eventually but why is talking about death such a taboo?

This is one of those times I will censor myself, for the sake of this forum.

But regarding your concerns, I do agree that some threads may garner unwanted attention. However, I think discussing how to create a coinbase account and link a payment method is pretty safe. This entire conversation is already on Reddit and crypto forums. Companies are fully within their rights to not conduct crypto transactions. But it is completely legal to do so, and it is also legal to discuss banks and credit cards that allow coinbase transactions.

You are right that there is no issue with discussing how to buy crypto. My concern is not so much about the legality of threads like this, but rather the information (sources of methods, transaction details and shipping practices, etc.) that may compromise those methods or make investigations much easier.

On the other hand, the cat may be far out of the bag, it's not my place to tell people what talk is or isn't permissible. Just sharing concerns.

I can't even sign-up to make a Localbitcoins account. I get prompted with a message saying, "Unfortunately we are not serving customers located in your current location."
