This is the link for the one I'm getting.

DuroMax XP4400E Gas Powered Portable Generator-4400 Watt Electric Start-Camping & RV Ready, 50 State Approved, Blue/Black Amazon product ASIN B001BMDFPS
I don't have a car, but is there another place to do it without putting others in danger?

In theory any enclosed space should do, but if any one finds you, by the noise the smoke or something it will fail

The exhaust of a generator gets very hot, like a car engine. Don't think it would work in most cars, except maybe a hatchback.

I'm not sure how much CO it gives off at 3,500 watts but I read Generators give off as much CO as 400 idling cars. That seems like more than enough, there was a case where a family of 8 was killed by a generator in their home.

I would think any size generator can be deadly. 3,500 watts is large, be mindful of the size and weight, will be hard to navigate.

It weighs 120 pounds and can power an RV but it comes with a wheel kit built onto it, so that helps.

Is this like the hosepipe in a car exhaust method. No one does that these days. Think the fumes are different from old cars.

I would test the sound levels on that. You may have to take into consideration the volume as it may draw attention and you may need hearing protection if you are to be next to it. I imagine it will potentially be loud and your anxiety levels will probably be through the roof.

I researched the hose pipe method and it seems unreliable with the cars available now. On the other hand generators give off as much CO as about 400 idling cars

Inverter generators will be quieter but may have cleaner emissions. Also I doubt gas generators can be returned by mail so be certain.

If you have an enclosed space where you're confident you won't be found early, you should put up a sign on the door/entrance/etc. warning of carbon monoxide so whoever finds you can stay safe.

I looked it up and its 69 decibals. That equivalent to the volume of normal conversation

So gas Generators give off more CO?

A generator should make much more CO than charcoal. Im interested to see what your co monitor reads. In my research the newer generators have less emissions and they have auto shut off incase the CO level is too high.

Storage unit perhaps or a Council lockup or a privately rented garage? I wonder what will happen to the Generator once you've used it?

are you going to measure the CO emission?
If the generator emits enough CO, it should be more reliable than using charcoal.
But unluckily the manuals of the generators never include information on the emission, or if they use an engine with reduced emissions.
This has always kept me away from considering it

This is way more reliable that running the hose these days.

I have a CO detector that detects up to 1,000ppm. I shopped around and there are a few that can detect up to 10,000 and it's a whopping $400. The generator description and reviews don't brag about safety features, plus I think that's one of the upsides of not getting a really expensive one.

yes, that's how I would do if I decided to follow this way :) CO detector (with a large range) + a cheap generator or leaf blower (of a not well known brand).
I was already seeing myself buying one generator after the other, trying to find a model with a high enough production of CO :(

What do you think of the one I got? I didn't want to go too cheap, like $200.

it writes "EPA+CARB approved"

I have found that CARB is a regulation to reduce CO emission

I called the FD and they can't really advise on it but thought it's unlikely it would make a difference given they give off about 70,000ppm

Many of these generators have a CO-Sense and will automatically shut down, if the level is too high.

I ended up canceling the order. I need to find an older one.
sorry if I spoiled your preparation.
I think it would be a good idea to check if the generator is approved for specific regulations

Nah, batter safe than sorry...right? 😅 It's "50 state approved" turns out that means it's fulfills CARB regs amount other things. It doesn't mention having a shut off but many do.

I suppose that the most modern ones (=up to date with the latest regulations) are more probable to have such features.
I would expect that such a feature was documented on the instruction manual. There should be at least a hint that, if the CO sensor malfunctions, the generator shuts off or gives a warning.
If you find (online) some manuals that report that, then you can try to find a model that doesn't write it in the manual.
