Discussion Books ft Suicide

I am a big booknerd and I am currently trying to read some books featuring suicide/suicidal ideation as I am contemplating my own. So I wanted to share some I've read before and really liked, some current reads, & ones I want to read.

Fave books ft suicide/or ideation:
- Anxious People & A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
- Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
- Solo Dance by Kotomi Li
- The Pact by Jodi Picoult
- the Midnight Library by Matt Haig
- All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
- Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
- I Was Here by Gayle Forman
(this one is actually based on someone committing suicide and her friend is investigating it and found she was on a suicide site like this one - it was interesting as it was super relatable but also shed a negative light on sites like this :/)

- The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Want to read:
- A Little Life by Hanna Yanagihara
- It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
- Normal People by Sally Rooney
- Looking for Alaska by John Green

I am also just interested in reading about dying in general and trying to come to terms with and make peace with it so I'm looking for books about that too.

No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai is a fairly popular book that features suicide as a central theme. Very quick read. It's really good, but most seem to enjoy it more than I did. Still recommend tho.

My Suicide: Directors Cut is a really solid film too. It's about a high school student making his final film project on the lead up to his suicide. Amazing movie I've been meaning to rewatch. It's on Netflix I believe.

Oh nice I have been doing the exact same thing, I definitely picked a couple from your list. My recs would be :

1) What made Maddy run (Kate Fagan) — This is my absolute favorite, it is a real life story.

2) Norwegian Wood (Haruki Murakami) — This is my second favorite in terms of novels and features a lot of suicides.

I haven't read any of those but thanks for the recs! Just watched the Hours today which features suicide and is about Virginia Woolf but it was pretty bleak and not sure what I got out of it. I might just watch the movie for It's Kind of a Funny Story. I have other books I want to get to outside of this topic before I CTB so I guess I'm being selective. And I think looking into other suicides is interesting. I recently read a book called With the End in Mind by Kathryn Mannix & suicide is a small topic but it's mostly about a palliative doctor sharing stories of some patients she cared for at the end of their life, want to read more like that too. The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch could be interesting as well but it seems to be able what kind of legacy you can leave behind and I already feel bad enough I won't be so don't need that kind of pressure haha

I started reading this book in high school when I first became interested in this topic, and wrote an essay about the book for my English class.

If you had to pick one book out of your list, which one would you choose?

I watched the Virgin Suicides in the summer and liked it. If I had to pick one that I'd recommend to most people it would be the Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The author has had depression and is open about an almost suicide he had. It's about a woman tries to commit suicide and in the in between she visits this library full of books of her life regrets and she chooses some books to see what would happen if she made a certain choice.

For nonfiction: The Inevitable, Dispatches on the Right to Die, by Katie Engelhart. Profiles four people and three "doctors of death."

I read "Normal People" a few months ago. Honestly it did not really stand out to me, and I definitely would not recommend it to someone else. People have different book preferences and I guess Normal People just wasnt it. It's still better than her other book Intermezzo though. I got through half a chapter of that book and gave up on it completely, which is quite rare for me.

I read "Girl in Pieces" by Kathleen Glasgow a few years back and I loved it so much I finished reading that entire series within a few days. The main gist of Girl in Pieces is about a girl who deals with self harm and getting over many traumatic events in the past. I related to some parts of the book like why she self harms (though probably not as extreme because main character had been through some serious shit). I'm planning to reread that book and her entire series soon after my exams. Her other books deal with other issues like addiction, if I remember correctly.

I also read Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford which is about a boy who attempted to kill himself and his experience in the psychiatric ward.

I tried Normal People again for like the 50th time and I just can't get into it so I'm done with it.

if you end up enjoying the bell jar, then i cannot recommend ariel enough. plath's poetry is unmatched, imo. lady lazarus is one of my favorite poems of all time—a bit of a basic choice, as its one of her most famous works, but i have a very personal relationship with it.

Try Suicide, by Edouard Levé. It's a book he wrote before killing himself. It's written as a friend talking about his dead friend.
There's also The Sorrows of Young Werther, a classic. Don't know if you'd like it, but it's profoundly moving.
