My least favorite is probably Dead Poets Society, in that it represents all the reductive ways the mainstream views suicide (impulsive, avoidable, sickeningly tragic, etc). Not sure which I think is best yet.

not only the scene in question but the whole situation in 13 reasons why. The way their problems were displayed it always been kinda goofy to me and not realistic.

Not a specific answer, but I have a love hate relationship with romanticized depictions of suicide. I'm glad it's talked about, but I wonder if that led somewhat to my obsession with suicide. Sounds silly, but when I try to look back and analyze why I like the idea of committing suicide there's little to work with.

There's also a sort of "savior porn" to it all where those who see suicide as bad look into the life of someone who takes their own and all the avoidable consequences are front and center. It's not about understanding, it's about seeing a solvable problem and determining that "yeah I could save them" to make the viewer feel better about themselves.

I suppose the empathy and recognition of us as humans is good. It could be better, but the result ms aren't entirely negative. I'm torn.

A lot of heroines in classic literature kill themselves actually, in different ways.

Antigone hangs herself.

Juliet stabs herself.

Madame Bovary poisons herself.

Anna Karenina throws herself in front of a train.

Hedda Gabbler shoots herself.

Kate Chopin drowns herself.

Madame Bovary's circumstances resonate the most in the sense of being trapped in an irredeemable situation.

I know it was corny but I kinda liked when they did it in House, a doctor seemingly randomly kills himself with no precursor or explanation, and they just move on after House gets frustrated not being able to figure it out. Despite all the blatant messaging they did, it seemed almost pro-choice from an angle I wouldn't be able to explain. It was a while ago so my memory might be hazy and the episode might've sucked. Made me feel represented at the time, as just a few years ago I would have looked totally "random" with no real background or explanation.
