I have some 20mm hemp rope, but it feels quite thick, uncomfortable and also the surface is not smooth, but instead ribbed as there are 3 thinner ropes threaded together to create it as seen in the picture.

I feel it would be good for a long drop with the goal of snapping my neck, since it is very sturdy, but for partial it seems ill-suited.

I was wondering what kind of rope would be recommended for partial suspension with just the aim of going unconscious as quickly and comfortably as possible.

I just replied to this in the other top thread. In my experience from a static climbing rope and a nylon rope I personally found the nylon 12 or 14mm rope to be the best. It's more comfy than the static although the nylon one wouldn't work for full suspension, too risky (breaking risk).

I don't think anyone can recommend a certain type, everything works differently for different people apparently depending on the strength of your neck muscles, the thickness, and also i believe blood pressure plays a role here, if you normally have high blood pressure it's gonna be tricky to find something suitable and you will need to use more weight to press the arteries. You will just have to experiment by yourself.

Well I'd assume a thinner rope is generally better as the pressure on the arteries is concentrated and not spread out over a wider surface, right? Also does it make sense to pad your rope with some soft cloth or something?

Technically, the idea that a thinner rope is better is correct, however it's more likely to obstruct the trachea because of that pressure concentration you are talking about, it might choke you and be uncomfortable, but as i said, try :3

I can't realistically buy 30 different ropes and experiment. My money and space is limited. I'm looking for some ballpark advice.

Go inside the store and have a test run with the ropes available lol try each one of them, strap them around your neck see what suits you the best and buy it :pfff:

I would rather not experiment in a store. I feel like that would raise alarms pretty quickly. Also how would I know what suits me best without actually trying to knock myself out with one?Just putting them around my neck won't help me unless I have some pointers for what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a rough estimate for recommended rope thickness and material. Also is there a notable difference between polypropylene and nylon?

Polyproylene is like plastic fibers I believe, it would be scratchy and be uncomfortable. A 14mm nylon rope should do, relatively cheap and easy to find. It's a little stretchy (not much) and soft. It should work fine for partial, definitely not full because of potential breaking risk.

The site selling the PP ropes advertises them as being particularly smooth which I figured would be good for any nooselike knot, but I'll keep a lookout for Nylon then.

Anything else to consider?
