I don't really know that Christianity has taken over the world. I'd guess that Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism are at least as numerous in terms of adherents worldwide.
Certainly prior to Christianity suicide seems to have been a fairly usual and acceptable practise in the East. I'm thinking of seppuku in Japan, I'm not sure about China.

I wonder how many would have the time to ponder it? Considering the reliance on farming and production it would be a busy day for most people, starting at a young age. Throw in that people had less lifespan and more ways to die naturally, accidentally, or in warfare and it seems like a busy short life. This is all my unscientific view.

Suicide is generally more common in the modern era so I'm guessing that prior to Christianity the rate was a lot lower, but deaths from other things such as diseases was much more common.

What I would give to live in such a time era. Damn I was born in the wrong era. Though one caveat is the painfulness of seppuku and what not. I'm sure the pain will be brief but if failed or during process itself, very difficult. I think if they only had some way of numbing the pain or seppuku but via more peaceful, painless means, then that would be ideal.
