Well, knowing this I would probably eliminate this as a spot, that's why jumping from 200 feet plus into water usually works better, since drowniung ins a backup plan. The golden gate used to work well for this untti the secuirty got so intense, and next year the nets should be finished. Jumping just has too much risk of not working compared to some other methods, because if it doesn't work you can be really damaged.

That must have been very painful. I could never get the courage to jump anyway, it sounds like such a terrifying way to leave this world.

that's where i'm hoping to go, i didn't know they were putting nets there, are they currently doing it now? and is the security that bad? :(
The security at godgen gate is pretty extreme. Some say that police officers surround any single person crossing the bridge. If a sinle person crosses the bridge and looks down or distracted they are just about guaranteed to be surrounded by police or security asking if they are ok, etc. One person who lives near there said that if you go at the irght time and act like you are sightseeing yu might be able to jump. BUt the security is pretty intense, moreso than at any other jumping spot in the world, from what I have heard.

How far do the nets extend out? If someone had a running start could they get past it? Or is it a net to climb?

Once the nets are in place there will not be a way to jump there I'm pretty sure, but I don't think any are in place yet, they are still putting up the structure. They are spending over $200 million on these nets, you can be confident they will work. They will be 20 feet down and 20 feet across. The world record long jump is 29 feet, but those are top athletes in much better conditions. It will be rare to find a person who could jump 20 feet across, but I suppose it could happen. It does seem strange that they aren't going to 30 feet.

20ft down doesn't seem that low for someone ready to jump 200ft. Especially, if you hang from the rail of the bridge it's like 14ft drop if you're avg male height.

The net is soft I suppose. This sounds counterproductive but I'd think a hard surface 20ft down would be a better deterrent.

I think you're misunderstanding the situation- if you jump or climb 20 feet down you will get tangled in the nets and you will be stopped by security well before you could do anything. So your only hope of jumping is to jumkjp twenty feet across and clear the nets that are twenty feet down. I'm sure they have studied this and are confident that people can't do this, or else they would be spending $200 million for nothing.

When they put more effort and resources in security than the mental health system. I might as well just stand at the bridge instead of calling the NSP lifeline, mignt be faster, probably would get the cops sent after me if I called anyways. Just cut out the middleman.

I never knew that there was that much security.

(When the only solution they have is setting up nets instead of actually doing something... reminds me of the shitty food and showers at wards. Heck, l could got to a fancy hotel, get better food and everything, all at a lower price.)

Ok, I understand now. However, do you think people would just go at night like it was stated earlier to still do it?

The parachute did partially open and that is likely what kept him alive. Highly unlikely he would have survived if the parachute did not open at all.

The parachute must of deployed from it's container in some shape or form and slowed the impact. Hope the person makes a good recovery.

Sorry, just wanted to add that I'm in total agreement with Nobodyknowsme so there's no confusion. I really don't think it is possible to fall from 500 feet and land on rocks and survive. Just my opinion though.

But it you go straight down twenty feet and try to climb across you will very likely get tangled in the nets and get rescued by security before you could get across- otherwise why use nets? So the only way is to jump twenty feet across without a running start- the standing long jump world record is 12 feet 2 inches, so once these nets are up no one will be successfully ctb-ing there any more.
