Azide is more effective than nitrite, however death is very painful and can take many hours. It is a potential explosive if it comes into contact with water or other metals. Nitrite is gentler, but less reliable and it is easier to come by and store.

How do those kill you? I just know people talk about them but I don't know how they kill or what the process is like.

IIRC, Azide inhibits cells from undergoing metabolism, thus killing them.
