Hi everyone,
In Canada MAID will be available early 2023 for mentally ill individuals. This is a huge relief. To fellow Canadians, you have the option to catch the bus with dignity and to depart peacefully. It's just matter of 16 months so hang in there and enjoy your life and have a bucket list. I'll discuss MAID with my psychiatrist next appointment and by low, he must accept my request or refer me to a physician who is willing to accept. Now i quit job, relationships, and I'm going to enjoy every moment until it's time.

I'm pleased for you that you will have the option to exit this world peacefully at a time of your own choosing. It is what we deserve. Nobody should have to resort to methods that could fail. I wish I could get euthanasia, but I live in the UK and it is unlikely I would get accepted anyway. I hope you enjoy your last moments, I can imagine it must be comforting knowing there is a way out. I wish you the best.

Hi,
Not Canadian, Polish, but seriously, some indifferent nurse giving you N is what you're talking about? Like I'd wait 16 months for that. Like I don't have loads of SN (and Xanax and meto) waiting under my bed. Whatevew floats your boat. People have been ctb-ing for thousands of years without any government/church approval.

Sounds interesting. Is it only for Canadians or also for out-of-towners? And what does mentally ill mean? Do you mean depression?

Depression is classified as mental illness in Canada, so yes. Euthanasia is available only for Canadians or permanent residents who have provincial health coverage.

There were elections in Germany 2 weeks ago. It is very likely that there is a liberal-progressive government which will make a new assisted suicide law. I really hope it will be very liberal so also mentally ill people can apply for it. I was really happy about the election results this would be a huge relief.

While it gives me hope, MAID isn't perfect.

My mother had terminal cancer and was in the hospital. She applied for MAID and my brother was helping her. But the waiting period was too long and she CTB herself. Tomorrow is exactly a year since she died.

I'm really glad that assisted suicide is becoming available in more countries also for mentally ill individuals, it's really positive news that make me hopeful for the future even though I live in an Eastern Europe shithole where this will probably never happen lol.

I hope you find the peace you deserve!

I actually talked about this with my therapist recently. She was actually open to it to an extent and said if a lot of time has passed and there isn't any improvement we could talk about 'other options'. I didn't know it would be available so soon though. It's a relief to know it will be available and it's a relief to know that it isn't so far away. I know a man who planned to use it because of cancer and had been approved, but in the end decided to die naturally.
While it gives me hope, MAID isn't perfect.

I'm so sorry to hear this <3

This is really my hope for the world. If theres anything I wish it would be worldwide euthanasia. Anyone who is really set on it should be able to easily end their life. Its the next stage of human evolution.

Florida doesn't have MAID even for terminally ill people. And with as many old persons as there are in FL, you would think this option would exist already.

I live in Canada as well . I wish it were as easy as you said. First you have to write a letter stating your background in depression etc...and it must be signed by a health care worker. Then 2 psychiatrists/psychologist have to access you over a 90 day period. They must AGREE that your depression is severe enough to be considered for MAID. Both mental health practitioners must conclude that you MUST:
  • be in an advanced state of irreversible decline in capability
  • have enduring and intolerable physical or psychological suffering that cannot be alleviated under conditions the person considers acceptable
So your psychiatrist does NOT have to accept your request for MAID. Some Drs do not believe in Assisted Suicide. IF this is the case, they have to refer to you another Phsychiatrist but this person does not have to sign off either. It takes 2 mental health professionals to agree that you "qualify" over a 90 day period. The criteria for you to qualify is not a matter of "you say so". You do have the right to apply to MAID after March 2023 but 90% of people will not qualify based on the above criteria. Talk to your Psychiatrist, if she/he agree to at least participate, then you only need one more in order to apply but your Dr. will tell you more about if they feel you may qualify or not. Good luck.

Not sure about this too much, but don't put all your eggs in one basket. Up until the first patient there will be endless legal challenges I suspect.

I'm not worried at all about the process you mentioned, it's a hope and I'll stick to it. If it doesn't work, i always have the option to do it myself

People don't understand the pain we suffer with severe depression. Torture. I wish I could just get Nembutal
too depressed to organize that. Would love help from Canadian citizen to obtain Nembutal for peace. Have money just no energy to try to get it.

I really feel like it won't be that easy. Even an organization like dignitas makes it very hard for people with mental issues to apply, but we won't really know what this looks like in practice until Canada starts allowing this. Good for them, I hope they won't make it too difficult. All in all I am rather indifferent to his passing or not though, because I don't live in Canada.
