Has anyone read: 'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint- Exupéry? It's an incredible book in the way it touches all sorts of emotions- guilt, pity, bereavement.

For some context, the little prince leaves his planet and, eventually ends up on earth. It's the interaction between a snake in the desert and the prince that really got to me. The snake is effectively the character of death. I wonder how often death is pictured as a being that takes pity on us and offers to relieve us of our pain. An exerpt:

"I pity you, you're so weak, on this Earth of granite. I can help you one day, if you get too homesick for your planet..."

Truthfully, I'm not a big reader but, I've heard the character of Death being described as fairly loveable in other books by Terry Pratchett. I like to think of Death as being kind too. Kinder than God anyhow. The hero more or less. Especially to suicidal people I suppose. Not that I believe in spiritual charcters truly. Neither Death nor God particularly.

I read it in HS then again early in the pandemic, in french the first time and french and english the second so i didnt miss things (my french has become shit). oddly enough the content is mostly absent from my brain but the memory of the feeling is mostly there. reading this did remind me of that part of the book (and what comes after) though...

the manga/anime series Death Note has some very interesting personifications of death, in the form if death gods. we meet one right away who comes from a realm full of them who ends up not being the only one involved in the story. one of the others was one of the better characters to me
