Promortalism is the philosophical belief that for any sentient being, it is always better to cease to exist.

Edit: I think considering how SS has been portrayed as a pro-death site by outsiders, it would be good to have actual data on the philosophies the members here hold.

Hmm, im gonna have to say no on that. I think if one can find existence to be preferable for whatever sufficient reasons they wish so long as it doesn't harm others then that's ok I guess.

I do not know much about promortalism, but from what I see it seems like a dangerous line of thinking. It presents an avenue for one to justify homicide, so I'm gonna pass on that.

It definitely can be better to end life in a lot of cases, but definitely not all of them nor always.

Unfortunately, once we are here, it's very hard to leave. We all know this inside our guts.

No- I'm pro-choice. If someone else sees enough value in their life to make it worth living- I think- good luck to them. It's not for me to decide death would be their best option. That's God level thinking.

I guess the argument is that not to exist removes the possibility for them to suffer. Maybe there's an argument there for before they were born- and I am fundamentally an antinatilist because of this. Basically- life is too risky. It doesn't seem fair to take that chance with someone elses life. Once they are alive though- it's up to them- not me on what they think is best for them.

I don't really think people on here understand what pro-mortalism means, it's just a personal belief that it's preferable to cease existing under all circumstances to avoid suffering in this cruel and futile existence, not insisting that other people must die. It's not making decisions for other people, it's just a personal belief.

And yes I'd prefer to die under all circumstances, wanting to eternally cease existing is all that feels rational to me to escape from all future unnecessary harms in this hellish reality. One cannot suffer from not existing so of course I'd rather be permanently unaware where all is forgotten about.

So promortalism emphasizes the importance of one's choice to die. A person's choice to live takes precedence over a promortalists belief that they should be dead for the optimal reduction of suffering, okay. Still, a person whom is truly a promortalist, who believes it is "preferable to cease existing under all circumstances," as you say, would be interested in convincing those around them that they should end their lives. Personally, I find that effort far more futile than existence itself, but perhaps that is why I am not a promortalist.

Depression makes it hard for some people to fathom, but some people actively want to exist and are not actively suffering or actively fighting not to suffer. Some of these people may even positively contribute to the world.

Ok, but it's still a belief that everyone would be better off if they were never born, even if a promortalist doesn't want to enact policies to enforce this.

I just can't agree with this belief. There are many people who are happy with their lives. Who on earth are we to say if people are better off existing or not? Isn't that for an individual to decide for themselves and no one else to judge? How one views life is wholly subjective.

Well stated. I think what many are afraid of is actually dying and not death. In death you feel nothing, how can you be afraid of something you can't feel?

I would say I am by the definition given by OP (that death is always preferable to living), but I think it should be people's personal choice.
