  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Here are some pro-arguments:

- We often have to hide the fact that we are suicidal and there can be negative consequences if we reveal it. I think I would never tell my boss that I am suicidal. Or that I am mentally ill. When I revealed the latter one (I was forced) I was fired shortly afterwards.

-Often in this forum I read horrible things when people revealed their suicidality.
Personally I am glad that I could open myself to my friends it helped me a lot. Though some stories in this forum very pretty hard to read. Some people said that so-called "friends" ended the friendship because of a suicide attempt. It is quite shocking that some people really do such a cruel thing. Suicidal people need help, love and support. But leaving them because they are deeply desperate that is pretty cynical.

-My mom once hit me because I told her I am acute suicidal which also was quite cynical. Obvioulsy because the abuse caused my mental torment.

-There are other arguments in favor of the hypothesis. There is a severe stigmatization of that group. There are widespread lies and stereotypes about this group. Many religions blame people who commit suicide for their alleged sin. I think some churches deny certain services for people who ctbed in some areas. Suicidal people are called cowards. This shaming is fully counterprodutive. Like the bullying of obese people. If obese people get bullied for it this it often increases their weight. I can speak from my own experience that there is truth in it.

-I experienced a lot of pejorative remarks on my suicidality. Also in the psychiatry. Personally I benefited from the clinics stays a lot though these clinics don't have an approach for people like me who have permanent daily suicidality. A therapist called me and people who ctbed insane. He regularly refered to them as insane people. I asked a religious therapist whether she thinks that I am going to hell if I kill myself. She affirmed it. Staff of the clinics also did not act perfectly. One guy joked I should not drink the whole bottle (of the antidepressant). He did not take my suicidality seriously. One person wondered that I am not a bad or evil person despite the fact I am so suicidal. I think she was religious. Then another religious person treated me like I was insane for trying partial hanging, However I don't want to demonize clinics or psychiatry. The benefit for me was bigger than the flaws. But it proved me how stigmatized suicidality is even for people who work in such a field.

-My dad said I was too smart for suicide. So he holds seemingly the world view that people who ctb must be stupid. Though I have doubts whether one really can have a consistent world view if one has two brain cells like my dad. He sometimes joked about people who committed suicide. Though when he described his rather mild (compared to mine) suicidality he was close to a mental breakdown. So many people are very hypocritical towards suicidal people and cannot imagine how it feels to be in their shoes.

There is probably a lot to add. But I don't have much energy to elaborate on it further.

Maybe a counter-argument is that suicide can affect anyone. Like celebrities who were loved and admired by so many fans. However in such a position it is probably difficult to open up about vulnerabilities.

What do you think?

There is no counter argument in my opinion, if we admit it to a dr we get sectioned, held against our will, forced medications that fix fuck all. No one wants to hear it, people get angry, there are now folk trying to shut down the one place I have found where we aren't banned if we say we want to die.
Thinking about this more it makes even less sense, realistically we are all on the bus with cosmic wheels, some of us, for various reasons just decide to get the fast bus with no more stop offs. Surely if we are all going to end up riding to the end of the line why can't we check out sooner if we genuinely want too.

Yes. It seems like suicidal people are treat badly everywhere in this world and after all we do live in a society that punishes people simply for wanting to exit a life that they never even asked for in the first place.

I'm sorry people have treated you this way. A lot of those approaches seem to just make things worse for the person suffering. Fear, emotionally withdrawing, shaming, punishing, and attacking unfortunately appear to be common responses.
