1. Law of Attraction is true and our thoughts have tangible effects on our reality.
2. Law of Attraction is a victim-blaming cult that insinuates you 'deserve' bad things that happen to you because you clearly weren't believing hard enough.
Both of these things are true.
I think the easiest way for people in our situations to examine the law of attraction is not the benefits but the so-called 'negative'. For me personally it became clear that the daily misery I was living in mentally was having tangible effects on my life circumstances, multiplying itself and 'attracting' the very things I was giving myself such anguish by constantly dwelling on them. This culminated in actual, physical effects on my perception of reality that were so severe it was undeniable.
That said, think of children. A war orphan who steps on a land mine, is it their fault? Do they not regrow their leg because they just didn't have enough faith that things would work out for them? Children are the most convinced that everything is going to work out just fine for them of any group, that they are immortal and deserve only good things, right up until the point where they find out the universe doesn't work exactly like they believe.
STILL, the basic idea that bad attracts bad and good can attract more good? It's true and helpful. Your mind, thinking, 'today, I will become more wealthy' in a mantra, is more likely to be open to possibilities that misery would simply filter out, more likely to notice a 20 dollar bill on the street, more likely to take a risk that could pay off, etc. I'm explaining this quite poorly but hopefully it comes through.
The other problem comes with what I often see in followers of the actual LoA group, eckhart tolle, etc. Because bad thought attracts bad, they *avoid* it, they ignore it, try to shut it out and pretend that everything is only good all the time, because to see even one bad thought from another person could 'infect' them, which causes both a lack of empathy and compassion for those in need around them, and a lack of action against problems in the world that need addressing in favor of selfish positive thought. Those obnoxious 'good vibes only' people on facebook, but taken to the extreme
Despite all this, the one resonating truth is that the mind has power, our thoughts have power, and they do and can determine the world around us.
The incredible animated show
Midnight Gospel puts it something like:
"When someone asks you if you're sick, and you're sick, you can't just say 'no I'm not', but you say 'I'm getting better every day.'"
And it works.
If you want a useful way to try to direct your thoughts toward good results and aren't sure how to start, and aren't scared off by anything too 'out there', one thing to try looking into is 'sigil work', explained in absolute barebones (and a little humorous) form
here.
