Everything happening and coming soon with AI makes me feel like I need to kill myself more and more everyday. On top of just my mental health, my mdd, my feelings of being misunderstood, anxiety and my family's terrible financial position
I've been really diving into high level discussion around Ai from those way more informed on the topic than me. I been listening to many philosophical debates and more practical ai predictions that aren't all based in dystopia or utopia. People like John vervaeke (professor at university of Toronto), Connor Leahy, Yuval Noah harari, and of course sam Altman himself.
Almost every researcher/ professional in the industry agrees the risk for annihilation is here to some degree.some feel it's 5% risk and some feel it's 100% inevitable whether it's 10 years from now or 50 we don't know yet. Some disagree on if aI can become truly conscious or if it already is and I personally don't think it is… yet. But that doesn't matter because we're already in a phase where these techbros are speedrunning it's development and where it's powerful enough to where bad actors can mimic voices, create powerful bio agents, and all kinds of other dangerous stuff.
Many keep believing that it won't replace us in jobs but if we can be real for a moment.. it probably will. We can be naive and believe what these techbros say about it "empowering us to do our work faster" but the big ceos are not going to look at empowering their workforces when these systems become fully multi modal enough that they can do our jobs by themselves with simple directives. It might not be next year but in a few years we will most likely see mass layoffs especially at the current rate of improvement.
As a black person I can't help but look at my community that I love and realize that we are way behind in education and base skills needed to get through this technological Revolution. A lot of us are struggling with mental health and I've just been feeling more and more like what's the point of my existence in a world where everything from the arts to programming are essentially comprised in the near future. And living in a world where cheap manual labor is all that is available for me feels like slavery 2.0 but probably with some small ubi check to "cushion" us.
I don't know what to do and I'm currently in tons of debt and trying to get through this marathon era of my life. But I'm not sure if I'll be able to prepare myself in time for this next stretch of human history. I don't even know if human history will even be a thing beyond a certain point.. just really feeling lost.
