Any Manager or HR here who has fired their employees

I was employed and working good as I could.. I had a hypomaniac state and started a small online business alongside my work.. This didn't go well with my manager when he got to know about it and when he got an opportunity he asked me to resign.. Now I wonder how they get the heart to fire someone and wonder if all the managers and HR should have a cold heart just to keep their job title?

We're in the same boat... My manager gave 'oral PIP' to the best junior engineer -> me in the team. They asked me to finish a ticket in 5 minutes.

I was a manager but I never had to directly fire anyone, which I'm thankful for. When I was an assistant manager, my manager had to fire a kid who made a really, really stupid mistake and got screwed over by his friends. The decision came from above his head though, they had no choice in the matter. I think the decision to fire comes from higher up on the ladder so the person making the decision is removed from the situation. They make the decision to fire but they don't have to do the firing. It's fucked up.

I'm a manager from a corporate and I actually run the HR side of it. I've fired quite a few staff members in my time but where they've broken major policies multiple times, and then didn't express apology etc - basically, didn't give a fuck or want the job so I've never minded. I think it would be harder to fire someone who was genuinely upset after a mistake, but unless it's something huge and unfixable, the company's ethos is to go down the retraining route.

We're not all cold and heartless I promise hahah, just need to find somewhere with a decent ethos etc - I think reviews on job sites are usually a good indicator. I think it's true what they say when people leave bosses and not jobs.

Most top level executives are psychopaths. They didn't get there being goody two shoes unfortunately. I should know because my father is one and he feels no remorse at all for his actions.

My degree is to be a manager but I'd honestly I feel like I'd find it hard to fire people even if they deserve it. I dunno. Maybe it gets easier the more you do it?

I used to be a manager for 10 years in 2 companies, one had 60 employees and the other one 10.
I did a lot of hiring, but I hated firings... I would try not to fire, even when we had to fire someone I would prefer and tell someone else to do it, since I really never had the heart for it.
But managers should definitely cancel their emotions if they wish to be successful.

As a small business owner, I've hired and fired people. Both processes suck. When letting someone go, there are a number of legal and financial obligations to consider. I'd say it's a business mindset that is applied. It can seem cold, but if my company fails, no one eats.

I agree on that part... But I feel a lot about the managers from big corporations

The HR department in big corporations acts as if they own your soul. They hold power over employees which shows in the way they interact with the other departments. I am no fan of HR although I understand they're just people doing their jobs.

Now, to your problem: Being a manager means having to deal with conflicts, among other things. Firing someone could be regarded as the biggest conflict there is. But that just part of the job description, you can't be a manager and not "manage" employees. Sometimes managing people means letting them go. It has nothing to do with being cold hearted.

Now, if you got fired on illegal on unfair grounds, that's outrageous! And I hope you have someone who can back you up. Are you a member of a Union?

If your manager let out go because the company could not afford you or you did something wrong, well, that's just the way it goes sometimes. It stings like hell, but most things in life sting, don't they?

I was a manager many years ago and had a ton of teenagers working for me. I hated having to fire them it was the worst part of the job even if they deserved it. After moving on from that job I have actively avoided having people report to me. I'm a manager now but of systems and it's much better.

Thank God you found out a way.. I was asked to become a people manager few times.. But I rejected those just due to these thoughts of firing others.. Now I ended up fired saying am not concentrating on the growth of the company but concentrate more on my small business.. That's how I ended up Fucked.. I actually needed two to three years to stabilize in my idea of the business, but they couldn't wait..

Been a manager im not actually allowed to fire people, I can only give people disciplinaries but only after I've had an informal meeting with them, even my boss isn't allowed to fire people, our place has to go through HR, they make the decision to fire which is so dumb, theres a guy at our place that had multiple complaints for sexual harassment and is still only on a warning, he was inappropriate to my ex instore, I put a complaint in but it got brushed away coz it didn't happen against me, I wish I coild fire people though(sometimes) if they commit multiple infractions

Businesses big and small exploit us the same. It's the structure, not the individual's personality or character flaws - though those positions do often *attract* the worse personality types at the higher levels.

(Commodification, the profit motive, don't leave room for human welfare or ethics - fortunately, we don't need them to produce goods and services! We really don't! They're systems of control, systems of *distribution*, but they've never produced a goddamn thing!)

The underlying problem is that very few people, including some managers, end up doing work that they find meaningful, and we're all bombarded by garbage messaging about how we're all supposed to find our passion, and treat work as an act of self-expression etc etc. That isn't possible for 90% of people even in rich countries, so for most people the most reasonable thing to do is coast along and try to enjoy life outside work. That also makes for a certain number of people who just aren't good at their jobs and are miserable, and that has to be dealt with. I've fired quite a few people, and it was always because they were ultimately making work hell for other staff by screwing up or shirking repeatedly, not because I had a personal vendetta against them. If you've ever had to go through the process of managing someone's performance, spending 30% of your time on 1% of your people, and firing them, you'd know it's the worst part of being a manager and the last thing you want to do.

As for the OP, that is a very different and tragic story, and I'm sorry your illness got in your way and somehow couldn't be managed better. I've had a few bipolar people in my life over the years, and it's one of those diseases where few people understand how awful it is. I hope things work out for you.

Just wanted to say nice profile picture. FOr some reason I feel like watching trailer park boys right now but I can't, even my old dvds are in storage. I was thinking about it just a few minutes ago, my ready to kill myself brain reached that as the last thing I want to watch. Been listening to the podcast though. Fucking wifi access at my local Starbucks went to hell since they closed indoor dining or I would go right now and. Do it before trying to die peacefully in the woods. Goddamn you universe.
