The US has a trade deficit to China because China makes stuff and the US buys it cheap. And American companies outsource to China. The corporations in America that decided to outsource to maximize their corporate profits. They're the ones that bought and payed for Congress which didn't even enforce border security in order to flood the nation with cheap labor.
China is the factory of the world. They have a manufacturing dominated economy. They've been fighting against the US in this global titanic struggle to achieve market dominance. The US on the other hand, has the reserve currency and a powerful military. It has used its military to surround China. All the islands that surround the coast of China are all US allies. So the US has been encircling China with their military and all their allies and basically threatening that if China ever invades Taiwan, they will be destroyed. The US and China have been lurching closer to war, its two great powers looking to compete.
In a sense China is manipulating its currency because they want a cheap currency in order to maximize exports. Just like Trump wants to do. Countries manipulate their currencies all the time in order to compete in the global trading economy. All countries compete with each other and they do whatever they can to maximize their benefits. Shocker.
This is a purely hypothetical scenario: Things could get brutal if China actually invaded Taiwan, where all of our chips are made. Could have a global depression and a massive war. I don't think America is ready for that war. I think the US would win the war militarily. Because the American military is so much more powerful. Not the Army. But the Navy and Air Force would just absolutely crush China, IMHO. But the war could go on for a long time. And the US currently has a massive debt. The same debt level as a percentage of GDP as it did during World War II. The cost of a war, not only because of the collapse of the economy, which would happen, would massively hurt the government deficit. Then military spending would be even higher which would push the debt and probably interest rates as well, even higher. Then when the war is finally over, all the associated costs with veterans would explode. A war with China could really be the end of America. Not the death of America. But a huge collapse in American economic power. The US may not be able to fiscally afford a war with China. Even though America could have military victories, the amount of debt accumulated would be astronomical.
