I don't know how Kamikaze Pilots were able to disregard Survival Instincts but I found this quote that probably helped clear their minds before their suicide attack. Just hauntingly beautiful.

"Transcend life and death. When you eliminate all thoughts about life and death, you will be able to totally disregard your earthly life."

"Just before the crash
Your speed is at the maximum. The plane tends to lift. But you can prevent this by pushing the elevator control forward sufficiently to allow for the increase in speed. Do your best. Push forward with all your might. You have lived for 20 years or more. You must exert your full might for the last time in your life. Exert supernatural strength."

"At the very moment of impact
Do your best. Every deity and the spirits of your dead comrades are watching you intently. Just before the collision it is essential that you do not shut your eyes for a moment so as not to miss the target. Many have crashed into the targets with wide-open eyes. They will tell you what fun they had."

"Remember when diving into the enemy to shout at the top of your lungs: "Hissatsu!" ["Sink without fail!"] At that moment, all the cherry blossoms at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo will smile brightly at you."
Notice how calm they were before death.

Suicide is a deliberate choice
Kamikazes had to follow orders
there was social pressure on them, the deterrence of being humiliated or executed

It's not the same thing

They also blew themselves under soviet tanks which is badass as fuck, although
many of these "brave japanese soldiers" did a lot of rape, torture and pillage in china
to innocent girls that didn't deserve it (and after raping them they would stick their rifle blade/bayonet in their genitals to kill them I've heard), so I don't know if I should really respect their bravery.

It's not the same thing but some parts of the situation are in common, so it is still possible to learn something from this that could be applied to ctb.

Obviously you need to be courageous and have lots of willpower to kill yourself, but isn't that well.. obvious?

I like the quote about transcending life and death. I hope that I feel calm before I die, I want to feel the relief that my suffering is coming to an end and that I will finally be free.

Death doesn't feel like anything, it's just unconsciousness
it's not peaceful or relaxing, it's just nothing, no time
you will just not perceive time anymore
Feelings happen before you die, in your consciousness

Sanctioned suicide

TIL Hissatsu -sink without fail. I thought they used "banzai" as battle cry, just like "freedom" for William Wallace (Braveheart).

On more romantic and soft tone, at my first attempt I read Hamlet over and over again before CTB, sure you have known this:

To be, or not to be:
that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?
To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.—Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Sadly the more you read about WW2, the harder it is to see "the purely good guys". USA did atomic bombs, UK started and perfected civilian terror bombings and Soviet Union did their things with cooperating with Hitler to occupy Easter Europe in 1939-1940.

Being brave and being ready to face death can be seen as honourable no matter if it's a German, Japanese, Chinese, Soviet or American. I think it transcendent nationality.

Just like today, neither Ukraine or Russia is purely good and righteousness. But both sides have examples of individuals who dared an almost certain death.

UK started and perfected civilian terror bombings
Horrifying on all sides. Didn't germans start it in WW1(London) and WW2(Poland)? They don't really distinguish between "strategic" and terror bombing here.

Germany did terror bombings against enemy cities in the beginning of the war.

But the really big bombings on civilians in England and Germany was actually started by GB to pull German bombings from military airfield targets onto cities. Germany almost won the airwar over the British isles, but because of this shift from military to civilian targets they lost.

Civilian bombings which would become more extreme in the end of the war with examples as Hamburg or Dresden.

I'm not trying to make excuses for any side, but I don't think ",they did wrong, so anything inspiring from their side is also always wrong" is a good perspective.

Many really bad actors, like people from unit 931, got employment in the USA or the west after the war. Others are Von Braun who basically got the US to the moon or several NATO commanders who were from the German army.

Kamikaze pilots were reportedly given methamphetamine before they took off. I'm not saying they (and the lesser known German pilots who rammed Allied bombers toward the end of the war) weren't brave, just that they had some chemical help.

This is a form of brainwashing. I'm sure the brainwashing started long before they were in their planes on their way to their targets. Not much different than the 9/11 hijackers, really.
