for the record:

i consider all humanity to be extremely intelligent (99%), and there are same rare exceptions like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, Jack Kevorkian, my mom - and too many women that haven't been recognized (and never will), etc - which were extra-ordinary

there are a lot of people who refuse to use their intelligence - ignorance, close-mindedness, indoctrination, etc

but overall, most people have the capacity - and potential - to be extremely intelligent

At least in my case I'm not really sure that intellegent is the right word, I've never really seen myself as being that, I'm just tired of existing and have awareness that existence is something completely undesirable in every way, I will always see existing as just being unnecessary suffering.

everyone here has the tendency to be extremely humble (beyond reason)
all of you really need to understand that you are incredible

your intelligence, as well as your suffering (unfortunately)

At least in my case I'm not really sure that intellegent is the right word
case and point: everyone here has the tendency to be too humble

@FuneralCry: unfortunately we hold the same nihilistic views - exactly!

think about this: voluntary euthanasia is coming! (in some countries sooner than others - 10 to 20 years)

when most countries will accept it, most people on this site will stop obsessing about their methods of death, and will start to focus on the main issue: am i truly ready to continue my life (including my inevitable future suffering), or is my life truly unbearable?

this site will be reserved for deep introspection, without external influences

i see thing differently the vast majority of humanity is extremely stupid it's only the 1 percent of the population that drive innovation and scientific breakthrough the rest of humanity the 99 percent are just surviving in their role they have chosen

I like to see myself as awakened more than intelligent. Once you have seen and smelt all the BS that this world has to offer, you grow weary of it after a while. You take the rose-tinted glasses off and see the unfolding reality for what it is. However, I have always felt that this world felt fake and I believe that most people are forced to put on a front to make them appear 'normal'. Basically, this life is just one big game and sometimes the rules are made up on the spot. So, sometimes you have to just bend them to get through it. This world is not my home, I'm just passing through. Peace X

accept the fact that not all people like computers (like @IamVerySad mentioned)

i used to force people to get into computers, i'm over that now: what if i insisted that Beethoven should work in IT?

mostly, intelligence is an unknown; an IQ test will reflect a percentage, of percentage of our intelligence. it's true that logic shows our tendencies, but an IQ test will never discover your deepest 'truths', insights and reasoning behind some action, or your intuition, or your previous unique life experiences. an IQ test is like an atom compared to a huge galaxy

often, intelligence is confused with knowledge - just because you don't have all information about a subject it doesn't mean you're stupid; it just means that you don't have the info, that's all

another example of the word 'stupid': just because you believe in a god it doesn't mean you're stupid: you are ignorant of the proof that science has discovered so far; or you choose to believe that science doesn't have any evidence for something. and this goes the other way too: just because science doesn't have proof of something, it doesn't mean that you should blindly obey a fictional book (which is becoming more and more ridiculous) - but the proof still exists, we just did not find it (yet)

I like to see myself as awakened more than intelligent. Once you have seen and smelt all the BS that this world has to offer, you grow weary of it after a while. You take the rose-tinted glasses off and see the unfolding reality for what it is. i hate indoctrination and rigidity more then anyone on this earth!

but that doesn't mean they're stupid

overall, you feel that this world doesn't understand you - this is your prerogative

my ideals will not fit everyone, and other ideals will not fit me

but that doesn't mean that everyone else's ideals are stupid

however, i do hate human condition and the lottery of life - the fundamental driving force of nature: evolution of the fittest

humanity is flawed in many ways, but intelligence is both: a blessing, and a curse - i'm not paying any of you a compliment!

I agree as far as folks are intelligent in general. I also agree that some close their minds, as far as self-centered, greedy, or everything is just a certain way and that is that. I guess that is called narrow minded and boy, through the years I have met folks who after finding out that I had mental issues would roll up their noses at me. I guess it was a good omen as far as knowing to avoid them.

like said before: humanity has many flaws - mental illness is extremely delicate and nuanced: you need to choose to talk about mental problems with very open-minded people (like on this forum)

i simply don't trust anyone - i isolated myself and i like my solitude, unfortunately this is not as easy for others…

Wow, nice if you see it that way.

The fact is:
"Man is born ignorant, but not stupid; and stupid he does not become even without effort."
-Claude Adrien Helvétius

Smart or stupid, if you can even say so, has a lot to do with early childhood education and encouragement.

Being able to read and write is one of the most important prerequisites for social participation. According to UNESCO, by 2020 around 87% of the world's population aged 15 and over had at least basic reading and writing skills.

Most of the people who can neither read nor write live in Asia or sub-Saharan Africa.

In a study on illiteracy, they came to the disturbing conclusion that millions of Europeans can only read and write poorly: Almost 50 per cent in Portugal, over 30 per cent in Italy, and almost 14 per cent in Germany.

i agree with everything you said - excellent points (and i find it tragic)

but i want to focus on intelligence, specifically:

has a lot to do with early childhood education and encouragement.
education and encouragement are huge benefits - clearly

but illiteracy doesn't reflect intelligence and intellect - intelligence is a cognitive ability; ability to reason, to think logically and objectively about most subjects, self-awareness, self reflection; ability to detach yourself from your own emotions, and have clarity and clinical balance

example: do i hate hitler? most definitely, and with a passion - but that doesn't mean that he was stupid. he was obsessed with his own superiority complex, extremely arrogant, and extremely rigid

another point to ponder about knowledge vs. intelligence
just because some people can't read or write, it doesn't mean they're stupid: most probably didn't have access to education (or, as you smartly pointed out - encouragement)

many of the uneducated or poor people currently, have the potential to be geniuses; many of them could be extra-ordinarily intelligent, but they just don't have access to information: "education and encouragement" (i love your phrasing!)

how many einstein's were silenced by poverty? eliminated by war? or how many were ignored or crushed by religious indoctrination ??

poverty in society is just one reason where society becomes poorer and weaker…

so, i firmly stand by my initial statement - for society, in general

but my thread was aimed at this specific forum:

"all people in this forum are extremely intelligent !"

and what i mean by that is that all people are smart enough to decide for themselves: individual autonomy is the most fundamental right in our society!

ultimately, i hope that all society - all countries - will legalize voluntary euthanasia
(or MAiD - Medical Assistance in Dying)

do you have the ability to see your mistakes?
do you have the ability to reflect on them?
do you have the ability to regret them?
do you have the ability to suffer in your life?

believe me when i say, without a doubt: yes - you are extremely intelligent !!!

(and this is not a compliment)

I politely disagree. I do not think that someone is highly intelligent just on the basis that they use this forum - myself included - but I do not think that we are unintelligent either. We are simply a community of individuals who have strong, and passionate beliefs which in most cases overlap. If an individual can express and articulate their beliefs very well then this (might) be a consequence of their intelligence, and not because they happen to hold a pro-choice stance.

I am unsure if I have misunderstood your initial post, so I will try to reiterate in a shorter way: yes some users (or all users) might be highly intelligent, but this is not because they use this forum.

This post is really, really not meant in a malicious or insulting way.

Ahead: It should be called education and promotion. Sorry, my native language is German. And my mobile phone corrects my words when I'm not paying attention.

I was only referring to this statement: I consider all humanity to be extremely intelligent (99%),

I also didn't want to give the impression that illiterate people are stupid.

No, many of them are actually quite clever to manage their everyday life. They learn texts by heart, mentally photograph signs and plans, invent their own signs, tricks and excuses to cope with situations. They seek help from others. In this way, at least 57 percent manage to pursue gainful employment. Many are unskilled workers in construction or other areas. Every fourth cook, painter or truck driver is functionally illiterate.

In reality, intelligence is measured by IQ. Then it says in the media, like in Focus online (German-language news magazine):
"The average IQ is falling - humanity is becoming more and more stupid."

I politely disagree
thank you for being polite - i love civility in arguments !
I do not think that someone is highly intelligent just on the basis that they use this forum - myself included
actually this is not an argument: i agree that intelligence is not based only on thoughts and discussions on this forum (obviously) - it's exponentially much more complex - thank you for pointing it out!

but, my own observations and my own conclusions, from the many threads and replies over almost one year, fully support my initial statement

If an individual can express and articulate their beliefs very well then this (might) be a consequence of their intelligence, and not because they happen to hold a pro-choice stance
brilliant ! (you are very articulate :)
I am unsure if I have misunderstood your initial post
my initial assessment is way too imprecise and too generalized - my fault

but your comment allows me to get to my hidden reasoning, which is very important, and not at all a compliment to humanity:

what i consider intelligence:
- main difference between humans and the rest of the species is self-awareness
(and other not-so-obvious differences)

how many other animals have the power to commit suicide, including the dinosaurs
how many other animals have the power to suffer - at our level?
and here i'm referring to our intellectual suffering (philosophical, morality, metaphysics, etc)

self-awareness and human intelligence is the worst curse of nature - the worst mistake in existence. our arrogance about intelligence hides the depths of potential misery…

most probably, it will end in self-destruction, because we're not able to handle the constant sufferings, and the payout is almost inexistent

so back to my initial statement: "humanity is extremely intelligent"

all humans are extremely intelligent (but clearly there are some obvious exceptions, like people that are not able to function properly in day to day life, dementia, etc)

ps. thank you for your comment!

pps.
This post is really, really not meant in a malicious or insulting way.
don't worry: it's very obvious that you never mean to insult anyone!

It should be called education and promotion
i really, really like the first one: education and encouragement (but 'promotion' has the same effect)
I also didn't want to give the impression that illiterate people are stupid.
i know exactly what you meant, and i know you didn't want to offend anyone!

however, all your points are still valid and i agree with all of them

many of them are actually quite clever to manage their everyday life. They learn texts by heart, mentally photograph signs and plans, invent their own signs, tricks and excuses to cope with situations. They seek help from others. In this way, at least 57 percent manage to pursue gainful employment. Many are unskilled workers in construction or other areas. Every fourth cook, painter or truck driver is functionally illiterate.
my point exactly!

don't worry about clarifying your statements - all people on this forum are smart enough to understand your concerns!

"The average IQ is falling - humanity is becoming more and more stupid."
i don't agree with that title - i consider it a very poor choice of words

i haven't read the article yet, but i think they're trying to say that many people refuse to use their intelligence, for different reasons (ignorance, close-mindedness, indoctrination, rigidity, etc)

ps. sorry, i don't speak german (and i'm too lazy to use google translate, but i'm very confident in my initial statement :)

no matter, i'll just change the word 'stupid' in your reply with the 'unable-to-fit-in'
