One of the things that keeps me from CTB is the thought of being punished and doomed to a worse next life. I'm not even sure that there is one but I do think there's a possibility. But why is overdosing seem to be more "accepted" compared with suicide? Shouldn't they be considered the same?

The situation you are talking about is hypothetical. Nobody knows for certain how metaphysical laws operate or even if they exist in first place. So whatever answer is someone going to give you can never be other than a guess.

that's up to you, i don't see suicide as any worse than overdosing (if anything, it's even less taboo than suicide now in this era of opioid epidemics).

Oh I know that. I was just wondering about people's opinions.

I imagine you have to first establish if the overdosing was purposeful or accidental. If purposeful, then it is suicide and I imagine would be judged like any other form of suicide. If accidental, then it is the same as any other natural death, to me. I personally do not believe in an afterlife or into any sort of religion.

People seem to be more sympathetic when it comes to overdosing which I don't get. Suicide is selfish and overdosing is just sad.

There's obviously a grey area there, as with any high risk behaviour that is almost suicidal.

The main thing is feeling confident your work is done here and closure has been achieved where possible.

Not an expert but I can imagine the majority of overdosings to happen after years of addiction to whatever substance is involved. Since a lot of people know first-hand how hard it is to get out of, say, a simple nicotine addiction they'll be more understanding of the junkie who couldn't stop shooting heroin 24/7 than the suicidal person they can't relate to at all.

OD'ing isn't considered selfish only if the person was an addict because they usually OD by accident.

That would just be because of the shifting attitudes towards drug addiction. I can definitely remember hearing negative comments about overdose deaths more frequently in the past e.g. throwing away their life, good riddance to rubbish

Overdose is not a suicide unless someone intends and use a bit more as a suicide method, then that is suicide.

If the person who od'd didn't want to die, that's an accident, as unfortunate as any other accidental death.

When a fighter pilot dies in a noncombat crash, I reckon that's pretty close to an addict od'ing by accident. Is it sad? selfish? or just ... no big surprise?

If you ctb, I can hardly get the point of being confident your work is done in this life? I guess the reason for ctb would almost always be that you couldn't make it in this life. That you failed at life.

Unless you're very old and have experienced everything.

That is a good point. As with the previous question above, I don't feel confident in asserting any particular rule of thumb because everyone is here with completely unique circumstances.

What I can do is share my own recent experience. My reason for CTB was unbearable physical discomfort (a feeling of having a black hole in my chest) which was caused by chronic emotional pain, in turn caused by failing at life.

However, a few unexpected things happened which have caused me to postpone indefinitely. A lady friend with whom I had shared a passion for Eastern philosophy contacted me out of the blue right when the theme of my life was tying loose ends in terms of unfinished business. On another occasion, I was daydreaming about how I might attempt a recovery if I had a financial windfall, and in that very moment I got a call from my manager giving me the mother of all pay rises. Later, I asked the universe for a sign and my friend contacted me again on the same day. At this point I was sold.

I have turned my attention back to my main guru and can see the errors of my former self; trying to force outcomes that were not meant to be. And buying into the Western notion that success equals being young, attractive, wealthy and popular. The goal of Eastern philosophy is to set ourselves up so that we do not have to go through any rebirths. I am ready to cooperate as needed to make that happen.

I think that apart from all the scenarios you guys have discussed the most important thing is to be at peace with your own decision to ctb. I can't imagine anything worse than leaving this world with feelings of guilt or being a coward because of doing it or whatever. I think being at peace yourself is the most important thing

I agree. And maybe this peacefulness means that we HAVE completed our own work here on earth. Suicide might not have to be seen as being so dark. Maybe it's enlightenment.

Ah, now you are getting into religious territory (which is all man made bullshit). Show me the passages in those ancient texts that say suicide is a bad thing and that hell awaits? You can't just base this stuff based on hearsay you know. And even if these passages do exist, I would rip the pages out and devour them lol

I'm not religious at all so I know nothing about passages in ancient texts, etc. But that doesn't stop me from wondering what is beyond death and if suicide has its repercussions. If there are indeed past lives, will my next life be even more tormented by how I chose to exit? I wouldn't want to inflict this unbearable torment on anyone.

Then if you are worried about that then why consider suicide in the first place? Just live your life the best you can and then you won't have to worry about things like that. According to Dr Raymond Moody (who has studied near death experiences and wrote a best selling book called life after life) there is no difference between suicidal deaths and non suicidal when it comes to the afterlife. Believe in what you want to believe in. Here is a short clip you might enjoy:
