  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

I know we've all seen the figures about '800,000 people die each year to suicide' and 'one person dies to suicide every 40 seconds', but I just wanted to take a moment to think of the courage, determination and desperation each of those people had.. and another 2,200 people will be gone tomorrow. I wonder when I'll become one of the statistics. I will eventually. I wonder when I'll finally get it right.

You inadvertently bring to light a poignant point. It's just dawned on me, reading your post. That number is really quite a small portion of the human population. As long as it stays that way I feel like pro-lifers (and when I say pro lifers I'm talking about the most extreme types that would see you suffer but expect you to do so quietly rather than allow you the right to pass peacefully and end your suffering) will never really get wide ranging backing and support. It's such a small issue in comparison to so many other things that some other 'movement' will always take the lime light by default priority. I mean there are more people dying to poverty and hunger in third world countries. We'd have to come a long way in fixing the list of worlds issues to get to suicide. Hopefully by then the world will be more enlightened on the matter though I wouldn't hold my breath. That said maybe someone will monetise it and find a good way to turn us into renewable energy sources. :))

It's inconceivable, to think that all those lives are being ended every day, every hour, every minute. Each of them is a unique person, with a story, suffering, desperate to end it. You have to take one person, then another, then another one, until you make 2000+ a day, and almost one million a year. It's devastating to say the least.

May every single one of them rest in pure peace and bliss

And may those of us who can't take any more pain, follow them soon.

...and for every person who decides to end their life, there are more resources available in the world that could go to people in other parts of the world, who don't wish to end their life

I envy them as they cannot suffer anymore. To me non existence will always be preferable to living. Many of them probably ctb by painful and risky methods as the society cruelly tries to deny us the option of a peaceful exit. They must have been so desperate. I wish that I was one of them, I would rather die at a time of my own choosing rather than die from other causes.

Some say suicide is selfish. It's self centered. Cowardly.
I say it's selfless to remove myself from any further harm to others with my moods, anger reckless behavior, depression, etc.
Self centered? A normal person can never know what it's like to have a mind that seems bent on self destruction and sabotage. Made to take poison (meds) to mask or shift the mind temporarily only to prolong the misery and suffer their side effects.
Cowardice? Upon drinking SN without another substance in my system, I will have overcome the most powerful force known to any sentient being; Survival Instinct.
It can be said Love is more powerful, but I truly believe my motivation to terminate my life is out of a selfless love for others. I know I'm hard to live with and be around. I don't want to be around me, either.

I've come to the conclusion it's neither one or the other. It's both selfish and selfless to live, and both selfish and selfless to die. Selfless to die for the reason you said. Selfish to die because we want to escape misery/the pain and may likely inflict a lasting trauma on the people who cared about us.

I mean there are more people dying to poverty and hunger in third world countries. We'd have to come a long way in fixing the list of worlds issues to get to suicide.
I was JUST about to mention this.

In Canada 4,000 people die every year by suicide.
Meanwhile 25,000 people die every year due to poverty. Directly or indirectly. Malnourishment. Homelessness. Insufficient healthcare. Often legislated poverty because people with disabilities are forced to live on a pittance.

Where is the outcry?
Where are the Tweets and Facebook posts demanding to end poverty.
(Other of those who are starving and posting Amazon wish lists and GFM pages to make it through the month, of course.)

Where is the hashtag to talk about that?

"Suicide prevention day" is such a farce.
It makes people feel better about themselves and is a tool to give each other absolution to ignore the actual failure of society.
