I think it's shotguns over hand guns, don't take this as fact from me, it's not my chosen method, but I think that's what I have read before

Shotguns are overwhelmingly more effective than handguns. I'd send the firearms megathread if the search feature of this site worked properly.

shotgun rounds do more damage over a larger space at close range

and historically i should guess that a certain rope thickness was more popular than others

Depends on whether you want a clean death or not
I'm spiteful so I'd probably use a shotgun but that's just me
