Screw your sister's opinion, she clearly doesn't respect how you feel at all.

Shows her ignorance and lack of empathy. Unfortunately it's a common problem.

I've had people very close to me say this as well. It's so odd to me that someone can know a depressed person and have their intense sadness and despair be palpable and still look them in the eyes and tell them they're suffering from pure laziness. The lack of empathy to me is so troubling and at the same time I almost envy the ignorance because these people seem to be doing just fine while the good ones suffer.

i wish more people would be just a little more understanding of the pain that others go through. Depression is a very common illness that affects more people than not i feel

Even if it were 'laziness' as she says (i'm not saying it is), most likely that 'laziness' is one symptom of many, result of multiple factors that a person cannot control 100%, it's not simply because someone decides they want to be 'lazy'. Even something seemingly 'simple' on the surface like the 'lack of will' to do something is due to many underlying things, blaming a person for something as if it were the only existing factor seems very absurd to me.

I wish people were more understanding, empathetic and humble (so that they would be able to recognize their limits in how they view reality and question whether the simplistic view of 'laziness' is really the whole picture).

I'm sorry your sister doesn't empathize with you.

Ugh. Screw that sentiment. If only they could switch places with us and feel what we feel. 'Don't think they'd last long.

I don't think she meant to hurt you people don't have enough knowledge about mental illness even doctors in America just recently acknowledged it's a disease…

Can't I be both? I didn't realize it was a binary decision.
She has a bright future as a therapist.

i was thinking that too, still feels kindof insincere to just write it off as laziness though. i suppose depression can make people lazy, but then being lazy isn't really a bad thing

I'm literally manic when it comes to this, i can work harder than anyone in the right time, but I go through phases where I literally struggle to feed and wash myself.
Depression is a bitch and nobody can understand unless they have it.

Your sister is ignorant and is all-too similar to my own family members... You're not lazy; you're depressed and it takes more time than usual to get through your morning routine and tend to your space. I wish your sister had more empathy.

Calling any person lazy is just unimaginative and often badly intentioned. It basically says that it's not the case that you're simply suffering too much to be able to pursue your dreams. Your dreams really do await you, but you simply have no drive in you, since you have no desires, no hopes. Let's be precise. It's not that these dreams of yours are stifled by real threats and setbacks, it's that you do not have these dreams, and therefore, you have no ambition.

Anyone with good intentions would bet that you would love to flourish in a world that is fair and rewarding. It would motivate and fulfill you. I think you know that deep down. What does it mean to call someone lazy in a world that is deeply unfair?

Yeps, it's better to lower the expectations that non depressed people would be able to understand. However, not a very helpful thing to say.
