Every single time I go to a doctor, "expert", or therapist. It's either that, or "it's just a phase", or "you aren't depressed enough" (I work 3 hours per week and they know that), or, from a senior doctor no less, "you are an adult, so act like it!!!"

*SIGH*

I don't want advice or someone to cheer me up. I just wanted to make a thread for those who have to go through the same infantilizing shit.

Society expects us to be resigned to our fate by a certain age. And it's not any one particular age, just whatever feels "adult enough" to the person judging us. It's one of the hardest things I've experienced as a currently 41 year old who still struggles with a great many things. And granted, there are some aspects of life and my personal situation that I've made peace with, but I'm not able to do it 100%.

It sucks that we can't all be found worthy of good care and support no matter our age, but that's the shitty world we live in.

And it's not any one particular age,

Heh, there's like a whole tier list for this.

0-12 Kids don't feel sad!
13-30 Too young to be depressed. Must be a phase
31- 40 You need to do better, have you tried *insert generic advice* yet?
41-60. Should have asked for help sooner, idiot
61+ You are almost dead lol, appreciate you made it this far

Or something like that. Sad to see it never changes. Only their excuses do.

I had a therapist so old, she confused my notes for someone else's. When she said that out loud, I thought to myself, "she's a HIPAA violation away from a new job".

I stopped seeing her after that. It didn't help she kept forgetting my own case because she disorganized her own notes. :/

Thank you. Honestly, there's so many of these so called professionals who shouldn't have earned their spot in the first place. Many seem to be chosen because they are so... dominant and condescending. And many of them obtained their education ages ago and is therefore outdated.

I didn't doubt her technical abilities, just her age related cognitive ones (I think she was over 70). If she'd made the mistake of saying the wrong name is where she'd end up in hot water. I just decided from that point it was best to take their packets of information instead of sessions with her. She was asking me to catch up everything we had been through and since I'm paying for the session, it doesn't make sense for me to be her memory continuity prompt. :/

I got what I needed which was a diagnosis and medication for it. So, slowly hanging in there, thank you. I hope you are well.

Or my favourite line: "People your age don't have any problems". Like the only problems people experience in their life is work and taxes and if you don't struggle with it then you don't deserve to have depression or something.

Geez, people near 30 still get this fucking rhetoric? It goes to show they dont actually care and just use whatever is in their fucking excuse handbook.
i got the "you are an adult" rhetoric when i told college admin i was experiencing domestic abuse. Insane. behavior.

Ah yes, I love the "You're not old enough to be depressed" routine. As if there's not a whole diagnosis called childhood depression or something 🙄

I think that society assigns certain desirable traits such as youth, beauty, wealth and physical health as anthetical to depression. Therefore, a person with those traits cannot actually have depression because that would mean that this trait people desire won't actually make them happy.
This of course is bullshit. None of these arbitrary factors will on their own make you happy.

Anyway don't talk to psychiatrists, they're incompetent at best and disinterested in helping anyone but themselves to money in general.

Ikr, what do they want us to do? Come back in ten years??

Their list of traits must be long. I've had my depression questioned becaus I have savings and am not totally broke yet, and because I made it to an appointment (???).

Yeah, they really are. I didn't realize it until my therapist of six years said "You're cured!" and I left with a smile... only to realize I'm exactly where I started. She is no longer my therapist. Thank god for german healthcare system, or the bills would have ruined me for good.

Get magically better I guess. Or you know, get out of their hair so they can wash their hands of your problems so fast Pilate would pipe up.

Ahh the average therapist in Germany can not do therapy. All they know is talking, quote Freud, make you do an insane exercise where you colourcode your feelings, recommend you go the Tagesklinik and lie.
