Games Ya want some Minecraft?

Hi folks.

Recently a number of people have expressed their wish for a Minecraft server within this community. There has been at least one attempt of developing such a server in the past, which due to a lack of activity didn't really work out on the long run, unfortunately.

The current hype around this game among SaSu members got us thinking though. Maybe it would be worth another go, but this time with the server being genuinely "advertised", for example in form of a sticky post. Look, we really don't know at this point. We have no specific plans about any part of this project yet - that's where this poll comes into play.

Please select whether or not you would be interested in joining a SaSu Minecraft server in the first place, so we can gauge the level of interest there is for this before taking any further steps.

If you're aware of the different versions of Minecraft, you can completely skip the last paragraph, it's just a little side-info.

As you might know, there are currently two actively maintained versions of Minecraft: the Java version (aka the OG one with a load of customization options) and the Bedrock version (aka the one that started off as a mobile port and has made its way to consoles too). It's generally accepted that Java is the superior version, mainly due to the sky being the limit in terms of gameplay expansion potential and overall customization. Bedrock's main selling point is that you can play it on your console as well as on the go and that it supports cross-console play (i.e. a Switch player can come together with a PS, XBox and phone/tablet/smart fridge player). If we were to organize a Minecraft server, we would need to make a distinction between both versions.

I voted for Java but I wouldn't mind Bedrock too if it means more inclusion if for some reason some members don't have access to play on Java edition.

cannot vote for some reason. anyway came to say that i can host it on the server computer I have at home. it would then be accessible through my domain which is lizziewizzie.site. hosting on my server is free :)

I do play plenty of Bedrock and it would be nice to play MC with other people. Although I do have 1 fear that I'd lose some anonymity here on SS if I joined a server on Minecraft.

I voted both, but I prefer Bedrock. It's just so freaking smooth and you can virtually play it everywhere (pc, console, phone).

i see java is winning so my vote for bedrock is probably lost anyway. i just voted for inclusion mostly so more have a chance of joining, but i understand java's potential is a lot more enticing

We can have both Java and Bedrock players playing on a single server thanks to GeyserMC. You'll also need Floodgate if online-mode is going to be enabled.

Soooo we're finally getting the Minecraft server now, right?

32 votes for Java in a week. It's reasonable to assume that only 20-30% of them will actually follow through with their vote and join the server - out of those it's unclear how many will stay active for more than a few days.

Given the limited interest it's simply not worth it to make efforts of setting up and maintaining anything "official" on our side. You guys can still run your own independent servers and post the addresses on the forum [don't spam that shit please] or ask people to hit you up for it or however you'd like to manage the whole joining process. One thing to keep in mind when posting the address publicly: non-members can see it too. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to you :)
