It sounds painful with water in your lungs...plus you'd probably fail because of survival instinct.... there are other reliable methods

I read somewhere that breathing in water is so painful it's like your lungs are on fire. But I wouldn't know for certain...

This is the "shallow water blackout" method.

I black out all the time, but I can't make myself do it on command. So maybe it works for some people but not for me.

I read the opposite - but I also wonder how the authors could possibly know. You can hardly ask the dead.
What I specifically read is the same thing as in gas chambers - don't try to hold your breath, just take a big breath, and apparently then euphoria kicks in and you're delirious anyway.

This uncertainty is killing me. (ha. ha. ha.....)

the same conflicting info exists for hanging... some say it's a blissful or peaceful experience, take for example full hanging: some report the seconds they are in full suspension to be euphoric and blissful, while others say it was excruciatingly painful... ughh what to believe? are we really that different to experience things so drastically differently?

Sailors were told if they knew they were going to drown to take one big deep breath of water and it would all be over

Unless your out cold or tied down its really going to be difficult to overcome the urge to hold your breath or lift your head. It is going to hurt, there is a difference between drowning and knowing you cant escape to drowning and knowing your in a bathtub and can.

Taking enough pills to pass out and having a bag taped around your head would be a better method. I almost drowned when I was younger and it's terrifying

What if instead of water I fill the tub with wine, maybe it would feel less painful

Oof. It does soud painful if you were to do this sober. However, getting drunk to the point of passing out in the water might prove differently. I might even end up doing it myself if the conditions are right haha. Nonethless, I think there are better ways to achieve peace, but again, the choice is yours.

Since wine contains ethanol, it would be far more painful.

I came very close to drowning when I was a child. I struggled for a long time while under the water. It was painful and terrifying but then everything slowed down and the pain vanished. I then felt comfortable, warm and had a strange experience for a moment before I was finally pulled out from the water. I was conscious throughout the experience and did not black out.

I think anything that is too simplistic yet doesn't suppress the survival instinct is bound to fail. Similar to what others have said, even if you want to die, your body will 'involuntarily' stop your mind from carrying through, which is why when you hold your breath for a long time, at some point your body will just automatically try to breathe. This is also the same reason why some ways of hanging fail, such as the person's body, sub conscious enough to still act, will involuntarily prevent oneself from successfully ctb'ing.

The original edition of the book The Perfect Storm had a whole chapter on drowning, much of which was learned from people who almost drowned, or actually technically did die but were revived. That chapter, however, was censored out in the later editions, i think because of fear of causing further dismay to the victims' survivors. Many millions of people have drowned. After the very initial shock and pain it's not bad. I think that chapter was censored because it expounds upon a very rare and unexplained phenomenon of people surviving and remaining conscious or semi-conscious for a long time underwater, like half an hour.

Your organism will fight with drowning. The cough will start automaticly and water will come out. Your survival instinct can win. Maybe it is possible, if you will be tied. But it is a very scary idea. The same as choking by a plastic bag. In a combination with handcuffs behind the back it is very simple. But also very scary. I tried it. And it was painful and terrible. Never more.

I am thinking to take lot of xanax (around 12 mg) then swim as far as I can in the ocean and let me drown to death. What do you think about that?

Drowning is pretty painful and will take a while, not to mention the survival instinct would most likely kick in. If I were you I'd try a different method

Do you think with that amount of xanax I will be stoned enough not to really be aware of drowning?

Minus the xanax, that is similar to the ending of Jack London's semi-autobiographical book Martin Eden, except he squeazed tbrough the porthole of his cabin at night and dived into the ocean and watched his ship sail away. Then he dived as deep as he possibly could so that no breath remained in him and he could not possibly reach tbe surface.

There's no way you can drown in a bathtub without outside influences, like tying yourself into position somehow or drinking to the point of unconsciousness (which would still probably not work). Your body is just made to protect you in situations like this. When people ctb via drowning, they go in ways that prevent them from rising in deep water, like how Virginia Wolfe died after filling her clothes and pockets with stones. Even that doesn't always work.
