I mean like idk how realistic this would be for me but I was looking at the unis and the courses there.

I specialised in Russian history in my undergrad years and whilst the best courses are in Russia I do not speak Russian and it's defo not easy to learn (I've tried).

I looked at some history courses in the US specialising in this period and country and some of them sound really interesting.

I would have to apply for a visa tho and idk how fees work in the US but idk I wonder if I would fit in well in the states. I've no idea what the culture is like there, idek if it varies from state to state either.

What country are you from? Do you have money? Tuition is high for international students for even state schools.

It does. :ahhha: Just get yourself a gun & you'll be fine. Depending on the state you find yourself in, some people might hate you for packing heat, but you can always kill them.

I wouldn't recommend it. The US, as a whole in this current time period, is extremely unstable. Whether the mishandling of COVId, racial tensions, political ineptitude, it's a mess, and with the looming 2024 election things will only get worse. If you have money you can definitely have a good experience here, but even with money I think the risks outweigh the benefits. I've lived here in the US my whole life, and have been fairly privileged, but this is the most unstable this country has felt to me, there is a sense of unease in the air, like it's all about to spill over, probably paranoid, but there is no reason to have hope for the future here.

I'm from the UK. Not exactly well off though since our education fees are only paid off after we start earning a certain amount of money

OK granted I've never been to the UK. But I can't imagine they'll much of a dramatic culture shock.

So I dunno if you know much about US college tuition. But the cost for a state school for international students would probably around $30-40k USD per year. And this doesn't include living expenses. A lot more for a private college.

Honestly, you should probably travel there before committing to this decision, that way you can have a better and more direct perspective on that country and its culture.

The way I see it, it's a long term dream, I don't know about the ease of getting a US visa from the UK, but you could probably start the process and consider many other options while you prepare for a trip. Maybe you should also think about Russia as a more viable option, mainly because it's the place you want to learn about and some people pick up the language when exposed to it from the natives. This applies to most countries.

At least from the perspective of someone who lives in a south american shithole, everyone I know who has gone to the US absolutely loved it, to the point that they built their lives around the dream of getting their citizenship, regardless of what they have to do to achieve it.

Wut? Why? Wut? Do you have a soft spot for quasi-democratic, hyper-Catholic, racist, xenophobic & homophobic countries with a horrible cuisine, godawful climate & a famously complicated language? Could your reason be uncontrollable masochism? :ahhha:

While I acknowledge all what you mentioned but since it is only a fantasy wish and never going to happen, i yearn for a place where it is not impossible to live decently on reasonable income while there is a civil society (being europeans) and beautiful nature and people. I know it is counter intuintive for someone like me but I like that there is a place left in the world where not everything is hyper priced mainly housing, food and rent. And yes I agree, cuisine wise they are beyond redeemable

If you can afford to do so, yes. Change might be good for you.

The political air in the US is really thick right now. I wouldn't reccomend you to go, but the choice is yours. Canada might be a better option since they have a very similar accent to Americans and they're in a stable condition right now socio-cultural wise.

Some American universities are ranked among the top in the world, but tuition is high. Living in the US can be extremely expensive, particularly for international students. Canadian schools are more affordable, often just as reputable, and conditions more stable as some of the above commenters have mentioned. The only difference is that the type of available programs may be limited. I used to teach at an American school but all my degrees are from Canadian schools so I have a sense of things in both countries. All that being said, I suspect Europe might offer some better solutions for your particular course of study.
