I don't think any real implications can be formed with this regarding gaming in general. Gaming is such a popular form of media for millennials and younger generations that there would need to be. Now gaming addiction does have some data to support a correlation with suicide (not necessarily causation), but I would argue that's the case for any addiction. I wouldn't say for instance consensual sex links to suicide, but sex addiction I would imagine could be.

Gaming and entertainment movies is actually just a way to cure your boredom, and most people who find their life so boring that they need entertainment stuff like games and movies are already depressed and probably find no value in their life, not to say playing games is bad, but if you are so lonely with no social life then this means you probably find no value in your life and you're just trying to cure your boredom till you give up

So some people use games to run away from their depression or social anxiety, right?

I agree! Gaming addiction is actually added in the DSM5 as a mental illness

Respectfully that's a misrepresentation of entertainment. Entertainment has been around since the pre-civilization, hell apes use forms of entertainment in nature. Games and movies aren't the issue, it's if someone is consumed by it and overuses them as an escape from dealing with their issues that it becomes maladaptive. Does loving the lords of the rings books or watching horror movies mean I find no value in life?

That's not the gamer, but his son, right?

If you're thinking of cases like Reckful most of the time they independently have mental health issues of their own.

Right but they said he was also a gamer. I don't see anything wrong from dying early but gaming can be a factor tho

I play games almost everyday since I was a kid and it's not cause I'm addicted to it but because it brings me joy. There's millions of gamers in the world and majority of them are pretty happy people. Yes, for some it's a way to escape the reality or distract themselves from it but what other sort of entertainment isn't?

There is always people who lose themselves no matter what the "addiction" is. Everything needs moderation and control. It depends on the person and the situation they're in.

Whether it's gaming, music, movies/series, social media, porn or whatever modern technology provides.

Depression, anxiety or other symptoms can come from anything. The reason why mental illnesses is more common last generations is because there's more people and it's normalised to talk about those things when back then it was considered "soft" or "weak".

Every kind of distraction is the same and they all matter in the same way, they're not the cause of mental illnesses, a person's control over it is. You can't blame anyone or anything since it's all the people together who made all that exists today possible.

Video games have nothing to do with it. Its their IRL lives becoming so shit they cope by playing video games, and some choose to do streaming to make ends meet. Unfortunately, it allows these horrible, scary creatures known as human beings into their lives who love to harass, berate, lie, backstab, cheat, steal, rape, and murder. Maybe not all of them, but there are many who are like that.

Something is very weird about that anyway; both of them obviously with some type of cognitive disorder and yet they are ruling this country…. People are dying from depression more than ever now.

Just speaking from my own experiences and what I've observed in life, but a lot of people who have video games as a major hobby, myself included, play games to pass the time of being indoors and secluded. Not that I don't find games enjoyable, but when you've spent your entire life playing games as a means of escapism, it gets a bit old. Up until fairly recently, gaming was often viewed as a very reclusive and solitary hobby for outcast people who were a bit ~geeky~ and didn't fit in.

Streaming platforms changed this perspective rapidly. Yet, even micro-celebrity youtuber and streamer personalities can have their demons. I assume this is compounded by how little privacy there is nowadays, if an e-celeb gets big enough their entire life gets put under a microscope and scrutinized, especially if that person is seen as an "influencer." Such a level of spotlight is probably like pouring alcohol onto a fire in terms of existing mental health issues.

When it comes to run of the mill ordinary, non-famous people who play games though, a lot of us do just have existing issues and games are happy medium for escapism to conceal the pain for a bit. You probably see more people with issues who are into games as opposed to other hobbies because video games are cheap and accessible compared to things which requires you to frequently leave the house or interact with loads of people.

It's not the gaming per se, it's the issue you try to get away from and distract yourself with that gets worse and worse to the point gaming can't help anymore.

The killer in their computer. People think that drugs and outing late are not healthy for teens, they need to see gaming community behind the doors.. your son could be playing with the most toxic human trafficker and parents have no clue..

I agree! Playing games in the bedroom looks safe and cheap. My friend"s son always in his room playing games when his mom calls him to eat he takes his food and eat while playing. It's convenience because teens normally trouble but now they are isolated all their energy going to the game ignoring the fact that eating his food while playing could be a result of bullying.. I'm not a gamer and I just don't like playing games

You're right about that!! So basically it will only hurt those with underlying mental/social issues

Who knew turning everything, including hobbies, into a competitive battle for relevancy that's tied to your self worth and (in some cases) your income can lead to insanely negative impacts on your mental health? :S

Biden is feeble and senile and trump suffers from some kind of narcissistic insanity! It's the very worst choice the 2 corrupt political parties have given us in my lifetime and I am 70. And we gotta have that again!? Throw a conspiracy theory obsessed Kennedy into the mix!

Son of a gamer? That's a big difference compared to being an actual gamer.

If anything, it probably helps with depression. People quit their jobs just to stream full time, and they're genuinely happy. It's actually kind of entertaining watching them stream, esp if they're funny.
