So, a cafe called Greggs here in the UK started producing vegan sausage rolls, and for some reason plenty of people find this horrifying and are stupidly angry over it.
https://apple.news/ArNJM2bNWQSWS3N8FhkuATg
And I just... what? It's a vegan sausage roll, it's not replacing the normal sausage rolls, nobody is forcing you to eat it. So why the huge outcry over something so stupid?

Maybe it's just my subpar memory, but I don't remember people being this shocked and angry when researchers said that we only have until 2030 to try and divert climate change. I also don't recall this much shock and horror over other horrible things like airstrikes and the Salisbury poisoning; at least not from the public.

I wonder how much nicer the world would be if the public cared about things that actually mattered -instead of raging over vegan sausage rolls and obsessing over royals and other celebrity gossip.

You're completely right. I've been saying exactly this for a long time. We've lost sight of what really matters and acquiesced to all the shit things that negatively impact real life. We've ignored the tightening screws that have incrementally put a stranglehold on our ability to live comfortably and successfully while caving to stupid hot button issues that are designed to invoke emotional knee-jerk reactions. This world is for idiots, and I'm glad to let them inherit it.

Oh, how I wish I had the energy to be outraged over a vegan sausage roll! Your memory is just fine...it's the world that is truly subpar.

Honestly! I wish the most pressing, outrageous issue in my life was the existence of a vegan sausage roll, lol

I think the media is largely to blame for this problem also, newspapers, magazines etc are often filled with mundane banal articles which some readers lap up with gusto.

It's the same with TV, the common choice on any given day rivals the lowest of the tabloids. Keep them dumbed down, don't let the masses think for themselves or they might just rise up!

Oh look! Strictly is just coming on.

I swear half of what I see in the news now is the royals. When Harry and Meghan got engaged I got more notifications about it than I did after the Manchester bombing. Now it's just royal feud this, royal feud that.. who's even reading this rubbish?

And yes, I barely watch tv nowadays. The most I'll watch is GMB and then just leave whatever comes on after as background news. My mum was watching Katie Price: My Crazy Life a couple nights ago for two hours, it did my head in! How people manage to tolerate this stuff I don't know, let alone enjoy it

Well we live in the era where words not even used directly at a person can be considered offensive, even within their proper context. Where people get upset and offended over the most ridiculously trivial things, but react with all the dramatics as if you just did a shit in their corn flakes. People even get offended at the presentation of established knowledge. It seems to becoming almost a common past time to hate on various demographics then use ridiculous justifications why it is okay to do so. Maybe it is just down to the social media era and its various empty echo chambers, that breed ever deeper resentment to everything outside of an established narrative. The internet hasn't created a sharing of ideas as we had hoped it has created walled off bubbles, further reinforced by algorithms censoring what you see, so you are only exposed to what you already agree with. With the death of accepting diversity of opinion, you just end up with one tribe hating another tribe. Gammon vs Vegan. In this case.

You're completely right. I've been saying exactly this for a long time. We've lost sight of what really matters and acquiesced to all the shit things that negatively impact real life. But lets not conflate irrational outrage with people being offended and reacting to truly poor behavior. That chestnut has been used by a growing angry movement to try and normalize their poor behavior by minimizing any reaction to it as "outrage culture". Calling anyone upset at horrible things like racism, sexism, greed, xenophobia, violence etc "PC" and against "free speech". If you are being a terrible person and are called out on it, that's not the same thing as someone being outraged about a vegan snack being an option.

Various tribes all have their extremists and they are the ones often making the loudest noise across social media platforms distorting what may be more grounded views that their ideologies are based on. My personal opinion on what you mentioned, is if an ideology is producing behavior that demeans, threatens you, or attempts to violate your choices then it should be viewed with all the contempt it deserves. But responded to within the remit of the law. I wasn't picking favourites either, it is ridiculous across the board. I would hope the internet landscape does not mirror the real world too accurately. But I wouldn't know, I barely go out these days.

I think that it's easy to see a minor, but very vocal group of people be outraged over something petty. It's televised, streamed, and reported on. I feel that the current state of Western media and much of the populace find humor or pleasure out of it is part of the sickness in our society. I feel that our lives have became emptier and emptier as a result of mass consumerism, crony capitalism, great lack of mental healthcare, and a terrible social welfare system.

I do believe that anger is one of those last primal bastions that we have, to be angry or to be upset. When someone lets out that ALL CAPS post or message, makes threats over the Internet, or makes a scene in public over something petty, I view that person as not having a lot of control of themselves or their lives. When I watch customers freak out at retailers over petty things on Youtube, I think that same thing. Some people do indeed have bad days, and that may very well cause them to react that way. I'm not saying that I view this for all cases, but when I see it happen repeatedly, I try to empathize with the person. The person isn't the problem, the problem is society. We've allowed everything necessarily from proper mental healthcare to rehabilitation in the prison complex to be completely overruled by profits. Making a negative judgment out of someone not having control of their lives or themselves isn't how we are a society are going to fix this problem. There needs to be changes in government. I think their needs to be a rediscovering of humanity in the American Government

I think there is also the problem that some people lack the ability to have a intrapersonal relationship and empathize with others. I do believe that our level of technology and having things 'instantly' may have contributed to that. But I myself am not an expert on the subject.

The public may be the majority but they, we, are but cogs in a machine that has shaped our entire lives. Everyone who keeps by with the status quo only does so cause they were conditioned and molded into becoming a semi functional robot that can work and make the rich richer and in return they keep the system in check by keeping us scared and afraid by so many encompassing things. Why do you think death is taught, especially in the Western societies, to be more frightening than living a mediocre and superficial life? Cause so they can keep us alive long enough to squeeze every ounce of dignity we have just so they can get their next dopamine rush of seeing dollar bills rising and less people to compete with them. And what about the people who actually challenge the system or for those who want to? There's not that many of us and because so we are trapped especially considering most citizens are a few paychecks away or one bad accident away from becoming homeless. I believe it's a lost cause but that's just me. I used to obsessed over all the animals extinctions and that got me really depressed knowing there's nothing I can do to help them. There's nothing we can do and even if we try it will all be in vain. This is why I want to ctb cause it's literally the only control we have to express in this experiment called life.

I think the mob mentality comes into play in instances like this also, people jump on the bandwagon without thinking twice about it.
It's like @Threads said, with the rise in technology, everyone has a platform to be be famous for five seconds. It can quickly degrade into a competition to see who can post the most insulting comment.

The media knows how to create false outrage. Social media exacerbated the problem and many can't ignore their impulse to anger.

I have to agree. Something else that bothers me tremendously is that people are more invested in a fricken border wall than they are cleaning up the garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean which is twice the size of Texas. W.t.f.

I was reading about something similar earlier, a four year old whale had a cord of some sort caught around its tail. It's sad that humans have been destroying the planet and what's in but still all we seem to focus on is hatred and arguing with one another

In a way I kind of envy people who get outraged over a Starbucks cup being red or a videogame talking about a subject I don't like, cause if that was literally all my problems in the world then my life would actually be decent.
