Why do people seem to feel more comfortable using their actual pic as their avatar?

I thought about putting pic of me on but maybe it's not a good idea. I doubt it would matter but something is stopping me. I would hate for someone to potentially recognize me that I know. Low odds but u just never know.

Because it's a representation of themselves. That's what an avatar is. Instead of finding something symbolic to represent them they just use their own image which I think is fine.

I'd erase myself from existence, if I could. Fortunately I'm very isolated; not many people will remember me, and very poorly at that.
